everything is viable; find something that gels with you and learn how to master it... or play a bunch of different weapons/everything because you like the variation... its really up to you
I like both Insect Glaive and Charge Blade.
But I'm pretty bad at both of them.
Like the other guy said, everything in this game is viable, so you CAN use whatever you want. However, and I don't mean to sound discouraging, some weapons in this game have a way lower learning curve than others.
If you do find a weapon that speaks to you, I'd recommend watching one of Arekkz weapon tutorials later on, just so you don't accidentally miss out on any basics. But again, you do you.
SnS:
-very quick and reliable, meaning you can roll pretty much any time you need
-has a shield, so even if you can't roll out of harm's way, you can just block the attack
-can use items and slinger even while your blade is unsheathed
-status and elemental SnS's are absurdly good
-if you are a desperate type, you can even stun monsters effectively enough using shield bash combos and attacks
-you can even mount monsters, just use back hop attack
I think the best weapons to start out with are longsword, lance, bow and switchaxe. They should offer a general direction of what you may like before you explore weapons similar to them.
Insect glaive is good if you like dodging.
all weapons have niche things to learn about them; but none are particularily complicated compared to others (people overstate how 'simple' SnS is and how 'complicated' chargeblade is)
Pros
- huge shield so that you can block all attacks until you get to Elder Dragons. Get comfy with the hit boxes so that you can play with a dodgy-slashy weapon later on
- easy to acquire skills from armor. It just needs Artillery (Anja, Paolumu) and Guard 3 (Radobaan, Barroth). All of these mobs are early game so you can get them fairly quickly.
- flashy boom boom attacks so that you won't feel bored.
Cons
- feels clunky especially in multiplayer. You'd need to sheathe and Chase after mobs a ton. Speaking of which..
- long sheathe times.
The easiest weapon to learn while keeping you relevant in the meta is SnS or Longsword
1) It will allow you to bypass first few charged attacks and get to True Charge Slash the quickest, and keep in mind, second swing is the most damaging attack in the entire GS moveset
2) This attack can stun monsters
and most importantly
3) You can actually block most of attacks in the game using shoulder tackle. Timing is pretty strict, but tackling through Teostra's Supernova or Nergigante's Dive is super satisfying
