Try restarting steam if it doesn't ask to update the game.
is when its just less than one meteor width away from the ground. glowing bright red, meteor about to land, thats when you jump, no later, no sooner. if there is one meteor width or more from the ground and you jump, you get hit by the tail of the animation. if you jump when its closer to the ground and you run the risk of dieing while you're jumping into the air.
But due to server lag, etc the jump is not 100%. Only use it as last resort.

There's three or four really good videos that break it down step by step on when to use the emote.
It's right between, as the meteor exist the whirlpool of death and a second or two after Behemoth start dropping his front paws.
Honestly if you arent prepared for it you arent going to catch that window of time.

One guide recommended getting behind the comet and practicing the tomeing from there.
That way if you are late still safe and well you get it right.
