For the Styx GL, you can go slapstick, or you can go poke-shell-poke-shell-poke. With blast, white and razor sharp, the fact that it's a lvl 3 and not a lvl 4 Wide can be alleviated by the comfort brought by razor sharp.
But wether you go slapstick or poke shelling, there are better options for both gameplay.
If you're playing poke+shell then there's no reason to play Styx when we just got two wide lv4 GLs with Kulve.
As for my combat style, I tend to do a bit of everything other than charged shot, which I never do. I do plenty of shell shell wyrm, guard pokes, and smacking with my lances equally. But yes, I'd say the Deviljo has been my primary lance for 200+ missions for sure. Insane damage across the board. And while I do not have the room for perfect polish gems in my current build, I absolutely do run perfect polish on all my gun lance builds. You make a very good point about me returning to Deviljo as my primary lance again.
taroth sleep is really good!
Doing a little bit of everything isn't really worth it on GL because every type of GL has different strength and weaknesses. If you like melee combos you should be using normal or melee GL (with normal being much less efficient due to the fast sharpness loss), while if you like poking and shelling wide is the best choice.
If you want to stick with the Insatiable Gunlance just skip the shelling part entirely both in your build and in your gameplay, you will be doing much more damage with the benefit of maintaining that white sharpness for much longer.
Current build I have running and I'm loving it. Thank you so much!

Three guard is effectively all you need anyways. 5 guard is overkill.
