Normal is about the attack, not the coating. It means anything that isn't spread, dragon piercer, or arc shot.

Close range coating just narrows the distance you shoot from but you gain more dmg in return. As in your sweetspot is closer to the target whatever attack you use, works with it. Atleast thats how i understand it. The sweetspot is the - through O when aiming.
