I solo mostly though so that might be why I prefer the utilty, since I am relentless with DPS anyway it just allows more opportunity for that - less focus on directly attacking parts when I can just go ham and the AoE from blast takes care of that (aside from severing) and the staggers just let me keep the combos coming, which by proxy keeps the blasts coming. I also like Paralyze for the same reason, but its consistency tapers through the fight.
I think Poison is decent at the start of the game. About halfway through the low rank stuff though it pretty much becomes obsolete, imo. Especially since you can just apply it with items.
Play how you want to play. Blast ia straight up damage but procs become too far paced you maybe get 5 procs over a 4 min fight and its locked damage.
Poison can be buffed to last longer but its damage over time so doesnt stagger and blow parts off like blast but will do around the same damage over 4 min or more with certain gear but the blast damage could trip a monster and let you do more damage...
Between the 2 it will be less than a minute in kill time if the monster has the same resistance to both.
The thing is this game is made for multi so taking 1 guy with poison and 1 with blast will be much more damage then 2 of the same kind.
Due to how ez mhw is it doesnt matter what you use even with a fire element sword vrs high fire res you can still kill the monster in good time.
Where the poison ailment best potential in this game? I cannot see them clearly.
