Apparently the whole thing is more complicated than I thought with certain guns being good with certain ammo types (reload speeds, recoil etc.). For example, the Nergi gun is best with spread ammo and for a previously dedicated melee user like myself, it was just more of the same with me standing under the monster's belly and shotgunning it in the face.
Then I heard Power Shooter II is great for actual gunning long range (normal ammo focus) and went for that. It's the final tier of the bone tree and since it's not an Elder dragon weapon, I was kinda shocked that it works out so well. Also Wyvernsnipe is just so good...
As for mods, whatever compliments the favored ammo type of the gun. Fast Reload speed to keep up the dps or in some cases, less recoil so that you can keep up sustained fire on monster weak bits.
bone path to get the best of most ammo + eye of the dragon
