GL Artillery Charm or Guard Charm?
I know Artillery seems like the better option but preferably I want max guard skill. Or is max guard skill overrated and I just need say 3 levels of it?

Arty is usually mandatory when it comes to gunlance and capacity escpally if you go royal burst which the best gunlance

Yeah, 3 is usually good enough for guard but you can never have enough deeeeeps. GL has really good hops anyway so you don't need to be constantly blocking everything.
Honestly artillery is a god send for gunlance, unless you really plan to not even use shelling or even wyvern fire that often. At that point you'd be better off going for Lance, so you can focus on just guard.
You can get quite a few armor options with guard but very few with artillery.

Then again i would with artillery either way as there aint anything better to get on charm.
If you don't go arty charm, then you'd have to get it from equipment, if you wanted it.

And arty skill is pretty rare, and on not so good pieces, you'd need to use 2 pieces to get 3 levels, unless you just happen to have that spare rank 8 gem.

I run Anja Greaves A, but I'm still building my set from "horrible" to "eh".

If you DO have the gem, Dodogama Coil B is your best friend.
Artillery is the only thing you can do to raise the damage of your shells and it only needs 3 points so the charm slot is perfect for it.
You just need capacity up and then got the entire rest of your gear and jew slots to also get guard and block to also block everything in the game.

Full Artillery is a must no matter what (besides the Negri GL). Guard is completely optional and if you want to go down the Guard route you don't really need more than 3.

On gunlance Guard points are almost non-sense while Artillery 3 is MUST, no matter what.
( except the Deviljho one )

Way better EE at minimum 2, and just 1 point in guard is most of the time more than enough.

This is because unlike the Lance that requires at least 3 point to get the most out of the counter attack, the GL has the shield only for defensive matters, but with EE 2/3 you'll mostly avoid the attack directions anytime.

I disagree, but to each their own.

Now, Artillery is mandatory if you're using gunlance, if you want to just poke at things, you have lance for that. A guard charm is great for lance.

Arty gem is rare? Maybe if you play gl but playing db ls sns hammer i have like 5 arty gems... i tried gl in arena and it was dog crap but ill admit ive never used it in any mh so thats probs why. A proper set will be cool to test now

Artillery gems are S rank rarity (Rarity 8) - that puts them in the same tier as Handicraft, etc. and rarer than Attack Up theoretically (but the rarity 8 pool is smaller so you're more likely to get one).

Now, I'm branching out into GL and I managed to find only one artillery gem so far over 300 hours - I did manage to meld two out via deco sniping though, so I'm very happy about that result. I'm experimenting with different GL builds now to find one I like best.
Everyone keeps mentioning artillery as mandatory, no need for handicraft etc. People seem to forget you do more damage never firing off a shot. Melee build always wins solo and multiplayer.
