Keep in mind that MR monsters have a natural 20% damage resistance, so if it feels like you're clearing slowly, it's because you are. Learning a new weapon and learning the clutch claw likely also hurt clear times, but unless you're speed running, it shouldn't matter too much. As long as you kill it within the time limit (usually 50 minutes), you'll be fine.
Note that defender weapons are by far the best and safest option for some of the harder monsters due to health regen augment and comparable damage to some MR weapons (no, honestly, it's ridiculous). I used the defender glaive against Velkhana and managed to get a respectable time in my first run (the slay mission).
As far as armor goes, note that the earliest you can reacquire master's touch is MR19. Until then, you'll have to make do without. True Razor Sharp comes pretty close though, even though it's worse in long hunts. I used the Drachen Vambrace all the way up to MR19, since you can probably make-do without some additional armor ratings due to how physical damage resistance from armor works in the game.
