PSA to those on Windows 7
When I upgraded to Iceborne it was virtually unplayable for me. Before it was perfectly servicable on my mid-end win7 desktop. Now it almost constantly maxed out my i5 cpu no matter what settings I used. I heard people had it working on windows 10 with dx12 so I made the upgrade and now it runs just like it used to! So if you don't want to wait for capcom or someone else to fix their poor optimization, I reccommend making the jump since it's still free if your windows 7 is legit.

It's more likely that it's DX11 rendering that's broken, and that just happens to be the only one people on Win7 can use. If Capcom managed to fix the messed up DX11, then there'd be no need to risk upgrading to 10 just for a chance at fixing the game. A lot of people still hate the OS for whatever reason and I vehemently disagree with them, but it's their choice and even if it was proven to them that upgrading to 10 would fix things, they probably still wouldn't.

Or we could refund Iceborne until it's working properly in Proton again

The compatibility listed on the store page for this game still says "DX11".

Disclaimer: some people have reported that this made the game perform even worse.

You probably should still upgrade because unfortunately Win7 support is ending on Tuesday, after which you should expect no more security and performance updates, even if glaring security flaws are found. Also, newer software will be less likely to work on your system from now on.

I'm having the same problems on Win 7, but I don't intend to upgrade. I've been using Win 7 for ten years and I tried Win 10 and hated it. The updates didn't amount to much and I'm not particularly worried about that, and I can't see buying a new OS just to play MHW. But I think it's kind of outrageous that I could play the game for over 200 hours with no problems and now it's borked because of an expansion pack I wouldn't consider buying because it's as expensive as a whole new game. If my specs were adequate before and I could play the game I should still be able to. I didn't buy it with the expectation that it has a limited shelf life and will just stop working after a while.
