optional vs assigned ??
Hi, first time through. Should I just go for assigned for the sake of levelling or do all the optional as well?

It's up to you how you want to do things.
Personally, I did all the side missions I could, and made any gear I wanted, before moving on with assigned quests.

You will be high rank for a LOOOONG time.
Me, I stopped and smelled the optional roses :mhwhappy:

You'll do optional/investigations eventually, you need to grind a lot in this game.

Optionals occasionally unlock stuff like the Harvest guy or additional gear or food. You want to do the ones with a little speech bubble at the very least. Other than that they provide additional ressources, which is always nice and are repeatable unlike story quests.

If you're in a hurry then you can do the assigned first. But if you like to take your time, especially with the grind, then you may do optional quests every in-between...Up to you to find a balance of both... :)

Happy hunting!

assigned are main quests to progress.
optionals are side quests. they have the chance of unlocking extra gadgets/tools and other rewards along the way. also a good way to get XP and materials to craft stuff.

make sure to capture all monsters instead of killing them. that way you also unlock them for optional arena fights. when you done all of them in the end you get another reward for it as well. plus capturing yields more rewards and saves time. Around HR 50 you might decide to stop capturing since you'll be swimming in materials. Only reason to capture then is to save time and potentially sell the materials if need be. although saving time when your weapons are maxed out is negligble as well.

Investigations is what you do if you need to hunt monsters for specific parts. Also yields more rewards instead of repeating optionals.

with the exception some speech bubble optionals only unlock after you done other optionals.

But as said already it is up to the player, I would however advice to not skip optionals and clear them out once in a while. As they can give you usefull tools and unlocks that help you make the assigned quest go smoother.

doing assigned quests ultimately open you up to all your possible options for armor and weapons in the long run. i myself made a basic set of armor in low rank and didnt upgrade it once all the way till i hit high rank.

THEN i made a decent all round high rank set and upgraded the heck out of that with all the armor spheres i gathered. and got some of my weapons into the high rank tier that i could. from there doing optionals isnt a bad thing instead of assigned.

in the long run, you'll be completeing optionals to unlock various things. including garden upgrades, kitchen upgrades, mantles and hunting tools, so staying caught up on those can keep the tedium to a minimum.
