It blocks nearly all damage wen taken from the front
- You need to be facing the incomming attack
- You cannot be attacking while blocking
- You cannot be in mid dodge either
Note, guard 5 skill / ironwall decoration only decreases the chip damage from block, it does not let you block unblockable attacks like teo supernova or vaal laser. Thats from GUARD UP skill / decoration.
As someone who ran the black diablos defensive HBG and spammed wyvernfire when I first started fighting tempered mobs / elders, I can assure you, you do NOT need a single point in ironwall on HBG (this isnt charge blade point guard)
P.S, this is what I used minus some decorations. Personal experience? I cheesed through tempered kirin on first try using this

I use it on both my normal and spread HBGs, it's been a lifesaver a few times, but more commonly it just keeps me up and active. I don't lose anything like as much time being knocked down, having to dodge around, or healing. That means more time shooting the monster in the face.
It blocks everything except eplictic meteor from behemoth, which isnt in the game yet so it blocks everything in the game at the moment
