How do I farm Nergigante?
After I kill it for the first time, does it appear in the world like other large monsters so I can collect its tracks to unlock investigations or do I have to progress further through the storyline to fight it again?

Just go to Optional and find him in the HR (Orange stars) quests.

Dont farm him until investigations... its pointless without the extra loot drops

He needs to gather tracks for investigations to pop up... So he just kills him a few times in Optional til he gets them Investigations.

Pointless is an exaggeration, but yeah, you're going to need a lot of horns and some gems, both of those are much, much easier to get in investigations.

So... crafting armour pieces and maybe one weapon? Yeah the optional quest will suffice. Want to craft more than that? Wait for investigations.

During the story quest I actually got the "Investigation added" notification several times after picking up Nergs footprints but they were all for different monsters like Uragaan.

Fight the optionals until you unlock an investigation. Investigations are pretty much always more worth it due to the bonus rewards offering higher drop rates for rare materials. Also you could try to search SOS for nergigante investigations assuming that it works.

This game... I fought Uragaan for a delivery quest, collected his tracks and got investigations for Nergigante. lol

Btw, I just learned about the superman dive so no more crazy aerial maneuvers needed to dogde his spikes. I also didn't use a weapon with Elderseal. Man, I have no idea how I managed to kill this thing the first time. xD
