A quick tip: when the monster goes into flinch stagger, you can get a slap and an attack off. 3 slaps and a claw attack = a softened part, so those slaps add up and make it more likely that things will soften even if you get knocked out of the attack animation later.
Trying to wound a part in solo with a light weapon is just not worth it.
this is the basic strategy i use for monsters that actually need softening for db like the brute wyverns. once i get the leg break which makes the legs weak points i abandon softening and focus on just wall bouncing them when possible. you get diminishing returns depending on the hitzone of the part so parts that are already weak dont improve much (considering the time investment) so its better to just leave it be as things are.
already how it works
Either way, that's a good option to use since it seems to have a little bit of i-frames on it, too, if I recall. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.
DBs have a clutch claw combo from demon mode off the O combo, you do both twirls then can use the claw as a melee move to latch on. Until next patch though it functions as a normal grab but after DBs/SnS get a couple balance changes you'll be able to instantly tenderize the part you latch onto with an attack while clutched which is nice.
