That, and if memory serves, it gives you more of the better feystones.
No ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, bring FIRE weapons. You'll deal full damage because all of his body parts are soft. If you bring water you'll be hitting metal plates and deal crap damage.
If I recall, the optimum method is waiting for him to eat in Area 1 and then burning him down in one go with a Glutton / Zinogre HBG. Trip him by breaking one of his legs (you could probably soften it while he's stuck in the eating animation now) and then he'll throw up a tonne of decorations.
Then it's either your choice to grab the drops and then return to HQ, or burn him down until he limps out of there (shouldn't be too hard with a good set) and then capture him for even more bonus rewards of feystones, etc.
Personally I always preferred Lavasioth for decoration grinding though.
for lava fish cluster is the way to go for efficient farming. otherwise you just go for the hardest hitting melee weapon you have or a water ranged weapon. (water element the source of your damage is still strong when hardened so its a non issue). add in how he reheats pretty often (namely his head) and the new softening mechanic and the whole fire gimmick is about as helpful as using water on lunastra.
lava fish is the better of the two (assuming you can do the hunts fast) for getting rare stuff since you get better rewards. jagras gives large amounts of decos so you can get all the common stuff. miasma, vitality, crit eye, ect.
When his armor hardens you'll start to flinch with the hits. Just bring a fire weapon and deal full damage. Even if he's not weak to fire you still deal a lot of damage.
When the hunt is in full speed he won't be having time to reheat himself. If you keeps reheating himself you're obviously not killing him quickly enough and this was before Master Rank gears too.
Will he go down quicker with Fire ammo?
Easiest are weapons with fire damage especially something like an LBG with flame ammo though, yeah.
