What's the point of resistances?
So... i failed the 5 star mission "Slay a Kirin" a few times and thought: "Great. Finally a monster that's difficult. Lets, for the first time ever, actually adjust my gear to it."

And i went from -5 lightning res to +11. And the lightning bolts deal exactly as much damage. If it just kills me in 2 hits, what's the point then? I can gear against it, or just run with max attack up, the outcome is the same here...

Am i missing something??

Also, each 1 point of resist is 1% damage reduction. You went from -5 to 11. You went from taking 105% thunder damage to 89% thunder damage. If he can 1 shot you at 105%, he probably still stands a very very good chance of KOing you at 89%.

%based damage reduction also gets stronger the more of it you can stack. Each point is worth more than the last point, as it will reduce a larger portion of the remaining damage. Even if you are still low rank, you can probably squeeze out more thunder resist. Tobi gear + thunder charmn + ele resist medium food buff should be able to get you to 25-30ish thunder resist.

Also, Kirin is an Elder Dragon. It's one of the strongest classes of monsters you'll fight. Even it's low-rank form is harder than some beginning High Rank monsters, and you don't even have to deal with Kirin's Thunder Armor skill at all yet.

If you can't handle him now, you may want to come back later on with a bit better gear. You've got way better stuff ahead of you, and just farming an HR Tobi for it's armor will make low rank Kirin a breeze assuming you still go through the effort of dodging.

Cartwheel Pony does 5/7 damage. I'd look into more resistance and use a ranged weapon. Cheers.

I've found elemental resistances and such don't actually make that much of a difference when it's just armor. You need to actually avoid getting hit, as hard as that could be. Kirin just happens to have massive damage by itself. I would really suggest to bring nulberries to cure thunderblight to stop stuns, but for the most part you should just becareful not to start any big combos.

Get more resistance. Get the elemental resist meal, as it can boost you a fair bit, and bring the Coral horn for your palico if you can.

Trust me, just yesterday I was fighting a Battlegoose with -12 fire resist, and his bombs 1-shot me from 180 hp and 400 armor. I swapped some gear around until I had +22 fire resist, and the bombs then hit me for around 30% of my hp. Quite a notable difference there.

Thunder Resistance

Thunder Resistance is a cumulative related to Elemental Resistances in Monster Hunter World (MHW). It affects player and monster statuses. Weapons and Monsters with high thunder resistance will be less susceptible to Thunder Element attacks and damage, as well as Thunderblight.

my guess is, it decreases the chance of getting thunderblight, and takes the edge off the thunder based damage. even though it doesn't seem like this, I use the thunderproof mantle when fighting kirin, and he does peanuts for damage per thunder strike with that on.

So i would suggest getting your resistance closer to 50 or 100 to see a real 'change' in that. 10 or 15 points isn't going to do much I'm afraid.

remember though, if he skewers you with his horn, or punts you with his horse kick that will still really hurt.

+11 is really not a lot
as Hammer of Evil stated, your resistance can go up to 50 or more,if you have a more precise build for it

get armor that has high thunder res like Tobi kadachi
or
Get thunder res charm / decoration
or
use thunderproof mantle (not really an option)
etc etc

Each point is 1% less/more damage. Getting 1 shot is worse than being 2 shot, no? Learn his attack pattern so you don't get chain hit twice... E.g his double row lighting attack is telegraphed on the ground, I simply and calmy walk to a non-white glowy ground...

You can gear up to +20 or so resistance with decorations... There's also the meal for +50 health and elemental defense(L)... There's also block or evade.

If you are the type who like to stand your ground and spam attacks(thus rooting yourself and be exposed), break your habit...

Oh, there's a thunder mantle which you can only get after you defeat a kirin in an optional quest... lol.

wut i fought kirin with full thunder resist gear (had like 27?) and he hardly did damage to me... (though i didn't have a fire bow so i didn't do damage to him either.. that took a while)

Which TC is doing right now
u unlock that mantle by slaying a 5* kirin,so it not an option for him currently

meal with elemental defense up, plus give your palico the coral horn, and apply the hit'n run tactic, that's how you pound the pony

You need above 15 resistance of said element for it to actually take effect. The more the better obviously, but make sure its at least 15.

I fight Kirin in -15 Thunder Resist as LS and gets 2-shot as well (one-shot if I get hit by a really strong attack but that usually don't happen as he cast is slow most of the time)

The thing that makes him capable of 2-shotting is his Thunder Blight debuff, once you get hit, you don't just heal up, you need to use those nullberries because if you don't, the next thunder attack that will hit you will most likely kill you.

EDIT: or like what others said, use a Thunderproof Mantle.

I had about 40 thunder resist or so, 15 isn't much.

Also use that vitality mantle when possible.

If needed use the health buff that gets you +50 health. Plus your 50hp buff from food. so 200 HP. You should not get 2 shot anymore.

invest in divine blessing if needed, that also can save your butt.
