I legitimately don't understand the appeal of ranged weapons to most players
It's an ARPG, why would I bring a gun to a sword fight? Avoid to learn the patterns to dodge with my I-Frames? It's like playing Dark souls with a bow. I just can't understand the appeal.

Enlight me.

Using ranged weapons pretty much makes a vegetable out of most of the monsters, especially diablos.. People generally use the cheese weapons until they hit end game then they will start thrashing everything with OP weapons they wish they used from the beginning.
inb4 black diablos come and ruins your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ day doing impossible 90+ degree turns
That feels when you remember Tempered B.Blos can 1shot most players below 450def with 150hp who are using melee.

Then you remember using a ranged weapon removed the physical def bonus from melee weapons.

I just use bow and arrow in any game it gives me the choice.
And it just feels great in this game!
Also shooting arrows at monters' butts seems to be very effective XD

As a hunter that uses all weapons, I could give you multiple reasons for using any one of the them. However, maybe you should just take a minute to google the pros and cons. You'd get way more answers than here.

Does damage like anything else.
You can't just stay in one point (effective range), you play the same positional game.
They just allow for a playstyle that's not covered by other weapons.

Each to his own I guess. Personally, until this day I never tried gs even in training mode tbh. It's the dumbest weapon I can imagine. /shrug
It's no point to argue tbh, some ranged weapons allow some sick combos and elemental/status mayhem. I'm starting to like the different coatings my mate uses now with bow.

I've used the bow now and then. I find I have a lot more fun with melee weapons, though.

But if people are having fun with bow guns, good for them. I don't think their fun is dependent on you understanding them or not, so there's no need to "enligthen" you. You do you. They do them.

Jello님이 먼저 게시:
Ranged still has advantages. Like beetlejuice for example when you fight him he drops his explosive turds eveywhere. Ranged can avoid that while melee has to deal with the rng impact explosives randomly falling from his body when hes enraged.

because its fun to attack from a distance and dodge with iframes, i dont know why youre saying it like its a dirty word. iframes are less in this game than in dark souls and generally can't be relied on to dodge unless you can really time them and/or have abilities for them.

i dont like the clunkiness/slow speed of most melee in the game. i realize that its slow for a reason but that doesn't make it not slow, or any less boring to me. i like that the bow does decent damage output, and that i can be rewarded for good aim by getting those crits, and i like my ability to dodge quickly.

your "avoiding learning patterns" point makes no sense either, because many monsters have attacks that will reach range users even if they're at range. i learn the patterns of every monster since i actually have to be pretty close to be in crit range.

some people go to it because they're bad and don't want to cart. they're new to the mechanics. most people like the technical side of it, and pushing hunts to finish quickly as possible. they might even be veterans to the series, and got tired of using weapons 1,000 hours ago (in playtime)

Some people enjoy the thrill of cat and mouse. I play both when i feel like it. Besides unless you clust(which needs to be nerfed please) you will have to really be on your feet. You take way more physical damage from gunning and you can't always move while shooting.

I play bow and CB. I like the CB on many fights, but strongly prefer bow on fights that either need high mobility or have monsters that fly. The "dps tax" from monster motion annoys me too much on some fights.

Camera is also much more annoying in melee when I can see only 1/3 of certain monsters. Hard to read moves I'm not seeing. With bow, I'm close, but not that close, so I typically can see the wider picture of battle.

not going to use it solo, but in group i can act as a support, go for demon bullet or healing one. make the creature sleep as soon as it fall in our trap, diminish it's stat, and break a specific part easier than most melee user with all the ammo choice i've got. and since you can put a shield on the heavy models you can even take the aggro if needed.
btw in dark soul i often used bow/greatbow for the same reason

It's more like playing a spellcaster in Dark Souls than playing an archer. Also it's one of the best ways to observe how monsters behave in a fight because you get to stand back and actually see it all, instead of being so close that you might not be able to see all the patterns of movement and tells.

Also heavy bowgun gets rambo mode, which is just fun overall.

PretzelBear님이 먼저 게시:
Well first of all it's not a sword fight it's a hunt, I don't see a Rathalos attacking me with a Great Sword in it's mouth. Ranged weapons offer different playstyles depending on your ammo and weapon type and although you don't have to learn all the patterns thanks to your range your gameplay is more focused on positioning, aiming and using all the gadgets at your disposal. It's fun to paralyze a monster and let your team unleash on them, it's fun to put a monster to sleep and explode them and its definitely fun to drop mortar fire and see the fireworks, you don't like sitting at range? Take Spread and now you effectively have a shotgun! Using a bowgun makes you feel like a Hunter who uses gadgets and wits to finish the hunt. Also major park is you're not stuck between the monster crotch all game fighting the camera and smelling their nuts.

Speaking of MHW specifically I really enjoy being a status inflicting specialist with my Light bowgun. I may not do the most damage but I bring a lot of utility to the fight, while still remaining mobile enough to dodge and get in close to the monster if I need to.

Since you brought it up; I played a mage in Darksouls, as I found it more interesting and less one dimensional than the bow.

Yeap was mainly using IG until i finished the story recently. Now i decided to try a ranged game with the bow as my weapons and its suprisingly fun and easy to pick up. The damage you deal is also suprisingly high based on where you shoot them.

Off-topic but would probably go for the bowgun and Charge blade next on my to learn list :D.

That being said, melee is still my go to, nothing more gratifying then sticking a wyvern blast up a monsters arse or perfectly timing a foresight slash.

HBG is my favorite ranged weapon, so I can’t speak on LBG or Bow, nor have I ever particularly liked them since Freedom.

Because it’s a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gun, and god ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ damn do those meaty ass shots feel good as ♥♥♥♥ to land, especially in World.

It’s like a timing a level 3 on a charging Tigrex’s head right before it hits you and flinching it out its charge, but it’s every time you smash a spread 3 in that ♥♥♥♥♥♥’s head point blank.

It takes about as much positioning as any other weapon, and if you get greedy, you will get punished. You’re slow as ♥♥♥♥, and you still need to learn MOI. Raw builds focusing on Spread are still basically point blank, so basically a gunlance that has a bit more range but forfeits the shield (Because that ♥♥♥♥ is for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) and punishes you if you ♥♥♥♥ up a roll.

People enjoy range because it satisfys them. To be honest I'd have to say that it's a complete matter of choice. There are melee weapons I find boring that people find exciting and vice versa. Like gunlance. I think it's horribly boring. But I love HH. Meanwhile my GL friend thinks the opposite. People have different tastes. Your comparison to Dark Souls just proves how little you understand the mechanics of the game. Playing ranged is actually more dangerous than playing melee in most cases. Why? Because your defense is much lower and unless melee coming unprepared can get your carted EZ. Ranged is also expensive and requires much more stamina management than most melee weapons.

Ranged weapons are a different take on this game. it's not Dark Souls like in any way. I don't see Dark Souls having combo charge shots or needing to reload guns. You can't sit on the other side of the field and you can't be too close. There is a optimal range for shots to do optimal damage and you need to aim at a target that is constantly moving even when tired. You can't reload while running(unless the shot reload speed is minimal but rarely do people use those shots) all the time and you don't just hit enemies and kill them before they can aggo you.

If you refuse to read why people enjoy it the least you can do it understand that it's not "the ez way out" as it requires just as much work as melee. It's just in a different manner. Personally I don't play range because the risks and I'm aware of how ez it is to get killed as well as how often I make a bad call when reloading/loading a coating.

I just posted a video on my previous comment, after reading a bit, I want to chip in, the reason I like ranged weapon especially hbg is, beucase I prefer safe distance between me and a flying tank that tries to kill me, I prefer seeing the monster as a whole when I'm shooting and read what its going to do next, because I can heal and buff my teammates from a safe distance, because I can read the battlefield as a whole when playing a ranged weapon, and that's what I like.

Bows essentially allow a hunter to focus on hard to reach targets, such as Xenojiva's horns, Diablos horns, etc. You get more freedom in builds because weakness exploit will nearly always trigger because you've got more chances to hit the weak spots. Being at a distance also allows you to provide overwatch, slotting quicksheathe for faster reactions to flash Nergi during bombs, or Teostra during novas. Bows, LBG and HBG also have access to more debuffs.
