"Failed to save game" fix
So I recently, very randomly encountered an issue where all of a sudden the game refused to save, and I just wanted to post how I fixed the issue.

I've been very diligently backing up my game in order to not lose precious progress to either a cheater or save corruption bug, and what I usually do is just copy the save file and paste it in the same folder, tagging it accordingly. However, it seems that the folder has a limit with how much you can store in it, as after making another copy of my save (I don't delete the old backups) I suddenly was no longer able to save ingame.

The solution is easy, simply move your backups out of the folder or delete your old ones and you'll be able to save again. Hopefully this'll work for everyone that's encountering any similar issues.

Since I dont know if corruption is savegamebased or folder based, I would always back up my save into another folder... on my other Harddrive XD

It would make sense though, since there only can be 3 saves in the game, I could understand when the games becomes confused at some point.

Actually, I think the issue lies with Steam cloud. I believe everything in that folder gets sync'd to the Steam cloud, and because Steam cloud allocates a certain amount of space for saves per user (around 75MBs), anything above that and it encounters a problem.

And when your saves are about 10MBs each... Well, you see the problem.

Cloud overwrites your saves, they dont keep tacking on

But yeah, saves are only about 9mb

I prefer to disable cloud saves, they mess up more than they are actually useful.

And for me, it says 9mb out of 11mb used, so Cloud doesnt appear to allow much storage to begin with.

Strange then, well whatever the cause I mainly just wanted to get this fix out there. With the Xenojiiva scare and now the risk of cheaters messing up saves, more people are bound to run into this if they were doing what I was doing.

If anyone's interested -- yes: BACKED UP SAVES IN THE GAME'S SAVE FOLDER ("remote\582010") WILL CAUSE SOME INTERMITTENT CONFLICT WITH THE GAME SAVING PROGRESS. I moved the conflicting back-ups out of the cited folder and it fix the problem immediately (while the game was running / without restart).

For reference, I had my back-ups inside a "back-ups" folder.

I have cloud backups from Crashplan, and it's not the commercial for them. This has saved my saves many times, last, few weeks ago. when my computer exploded during playing Astroneer and put my save game into breaked-nonloading state. I remember five or six such situations when I was restoring my broken save files from the cloud backup. I recommend this approach to anyone, you don't have to remember to do backups, they do in background on the fly.
