Go for it. It is viable, it is strong, and it can be very effective. But just remember: your primary job is to still deal damage. Nobody wants somebody who sits in the back and hands out buffs without contributing their weight in terms of hitting the thing. Look at the Hunting Horn. Now that's a support weapon. Sure, they give AoE buffs but their job is still the same as yours - to make some Big Numbers fly out of monster's heads.
If you want to chuck on Mushroomancer and Wide-Range and toss out a Mega Armor/Demon at the beginning of the fight, heal damage and blights, that's great! You'll prevent carts and with people being looked after by you, they'll have more time to DPS without needing to stop their damage to heal.
But you still need to do damage too. You still need to make up for that loss in your own DPS.
Solo HH mains would like to have a word with you
it's not fully support weapon where you just sit on background spamming song you also need to contribute the impact and exhaust damage
Hunting horn's gimmick is support, it can still wail on the monster just as hard as any hammer can. The RT attacks on performances are insane.

This build allows me to keep my allies alive if one or more of them have taken damage. If someone is at critical health and is endanger of getting carted I'll pop a Mega Potion.
You can buff your allies with the Demondrug and Armorskin juices as well as Might Seed and Armor Seed. Optional in giving the group Dash Juice if your willing to farm for a an overstock of the item.
The main downside to this build is that every so often you'll have down time as you are keeping your eyes on buffs and your allies hp, as well as the heavy consumable consumption. You can still perform comparable damage and provide the mounts when needed and your Blast Bug boosts everyone's dps as long as you know how to manage the meter and refill your bugs stamina.
I don't know if I'll be playing it, I just want to make it.
WIGGLER!
