My second is the HBG. Just walking up to something and turning them into swiss cheese is a real thrill.
200 damage? Ah.. Thats normal. See it for yourself.
(Tip: Go for head strike).
Well if you wanted 200+ damage you could just use bow, shooting anywhere on the monster, while you stand still and watch it roll around on the ground in pain.
If you want a heavy hitter but something a bit more different, hammer and greatsword have you covered, both are all about landing that single massive hit, the rest of your time is spent dodging, poking, and looking for an opening.
For a fun all rounder, easy to pick up but challenging to master, try longsword. This has ended up the weapon I'm most comfortable with. It's mobile, has long reach, strong combos, decent pokes, good defence. It's the full package, without going all out in any single area.
If you want crazy mobility and the ability to fly up to meet those flying bastard monsters, try insect glaive. It hits fast, moves fast, and can stay airborne for ages. Also great for mounting, since you don't need a ledge or slope to do it.
If you want to try something more defensive, while maintaining offensive power, go gunlance. It has a heavy shield to tank even the strongest hits, but by taking advantage of the 'gun' part it can dish out some crazy spike damage when the monster finally gives up trying to breach your impregnable defence.
Or there's ranged. I'd recommend the heavy hitting heavy bowgun, but if that feels too cumbersome (unlikely given that you're a switch axe player) you can try light bowgun too. It's a very different playstyle to be hovering at mid distance pounding shot after shot into a monster.
Okay, so that's me blabbing on about various weapons I've used. My personal recommendations would be longsword and heavy bowgun. Of the melee weapons I've simply found the longsword ultimately the most fun to use, of the ranged weapons I love my griffon blazooka.
I also particularly like the Great Sword. Do a standard True Charge Slash build first, and the later, a Crit Draw build. It turned the annoying Kirin fight with melee weapons into a fun one.
The Lance and Gunlance can offer you a very different experience.
Finally if you go range, try the Bow. It's my favorite range weapon.
I'd also say to play the Hunting Horn or Sword & Shield, but most players don't like those weapons, even though they are my favorites.
I tried the bow. It can never give me a 600 damage on screen and bow relies heavily on size of the monster itself. The longer the better too, doesn't matter for great sword, as long as you go for the head.
I recommend LS. It has a charge gauge you can use to stack bonus damage and has some really big bursty attacks now, new in World.
I main IG myself, and it is very nuanced and fun to play, very fast flurry of combos and most people who stay airborn aren't doing it right.
CB is another good choice, considering you are into the whole swapping modes mid combo. CB has elemental phials you charge to use the axe mode for bonus damage or element. You can also charge the shield to damage the monster while blocking and also boosting all axe damage. You move slow, but get some nice repositioning moves for mid combo, which makes it feel very maneuverable when you know what you are doing. Also, when you are swapping between modes mid combo, and any other time really when your shield is animating toward the monster, you get "auto-guard." This is called a guard point. Basically, you are about to take a hit, so you swap weapons and mid animation you just block the monster for 100% of the damage... to boot, if you charged your shield it will discharge into the monster's face and sometimes break a horn or knock him down. It is a very difficult to master weapon that is very rewarding when you do it correctly.
My first pick is still LS for you, I think it's easy to pick up and hard to master. It plays similarly to the sword mode of Swaxe, in that you pick between vertical high reaching slices or wide sweeping slashes. You can fade slash to reposition in mid combo to stick to a moving enemy or dodge attacks. When you master it, you will really feel like one with the sword. Plus, now in World, you can counter attack which gives you like an invincible dodge + counter attack which is super satisfying to pull off. The hardest part of the LS to master is that you can delay your combo strikes. Sometimes you will want to keep the chain going but slow down between hits to time your counter attack perfectly or a clutch fade slash. It is a lot more complicated than you would expect with only 3 primary attacks / combos.
In addition I find certain weapons better for certain monsters, charge blade for example has very strong block, useful for monsters with insase 1 shots, that can be blocked for minimal damage. Hammer is useful against things that dont stay still since you can still move around whilst charging attacks, and switch axe big reach high damage weapon useful for larger monsters,
I would prorobly recommend charge blade if your coming fro switch axe, they are somewhat simular in that you do you standard combos to fill your bars and then unless your powerful moves. Charge blade is some what slower than switch axe and has more to do as you essentually have 4 meters (phial charge/phials/shield charge/sword charge) vs 2 with the switch axe. However there is big diffrence and that is blocking, you'll have to get used to blocking attacks rather than dodging all the time. Blocking actually charges your phials and it actually pretty strong (though you will still take damage), so its often better to block rather than dodge.
Go Whack those monster's head
i don't know if this a curse or not when you play hammer you only can see the monster's head while his body is blur
Seems like most people recommended either LS or CB so I guess I'll give those two a bit more time for now.
Hammer has some pretty insane DPS as well and is the god-tier part breaker (except tails) if you know how to capitalize on stuns and don't just try to spam level 3 charges constantly. Has amazing utility, level 2 charge is an uppercut that is great for hitting heads when a monster is elevated, or for hitting flying monsters. There's a reason this is seemingly the favored weapon of Speedrunners, or at least has been historically.
Bowgunners are a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ storm when used correctly and have great support/utility options, but high learning curves. Bow is probably the most forgiving of the ranged weapons and has very high mobility.
HH is also great for breaking parts / stuns and has fair DPS, but this weapon truly shines in multiplayer when the user is on point with the buffs. A talented HH user in a party can just make you feel like you're cheesing entire hunts. I imagine it feels great being that person, I suck with HH.
Dual Blades, Insect Glaive and Switch Axe are probably the most aggressive weapons in the game. DB and IG are typically all about landing flurries of attacks, though with DB depending on smart use of the demon mode and the IG being all about managing extracts and capitalizing on mounts. Switch Axe is deceptively fast (though not DB/IG fast) for how big a weapon it is and has pretty good mobility when in axe mode, this thing is a marriage made in heaven for anybody who is good at learning a monster well enough to be able to constantly hug it and capitalize evades before resuming punishment. SA is my main weapon if I have one.
Lance and Gunlance make you a tank, but don't hide behind your shield too often. Lance is all about getting up in a monster's face and poke, poke, poking away and blocking attacks with careful timing before resuming, with the counter block being the perfect reward for those who really master attack timings. The Lance has surprising DPS for such a defensive weapon and the charge can make traversing large, open areas laughable. The Gunlance has a far bigger learning curve but the right lance in the right hands can unleash a world of hurt and break parts like mad to boot. It's about knowing when to use the lance and when to use the gun, overuse/spam of either without balance will hurt its effectiveness immensely and burn sharpness like crazy.
Sword and Shield is the 'jack of all trades' weapon if there is such a thing in MH, it has a block (though it's not the best block and should be used as a last resort most of the time) which doubles (well, the shield, not the block itself) as a means to do stun/exhaust damage and even break certain parts. The blade is able to cut off tails just fine and the rising slash is good for mounts. The faster speed of this weapon is great for applying elemental statuses like sleep. The ability to use items when drawn is also very useful and a very forgiving option for newer players. There's not really any one category this weapon SHINES in, but it's not really at a disadvantage in any category either. It's just, a jack of all trades, though a master of none.
Long Sword is the combo king, this weapon is all about building up that spirit gauge and then capitalizing on windows to unleash a whirlwind of damage, and it has pretty decent mobility for such a long ass weapon. If you don't maintain your spirit gauge and capitalize on the spirit combos you will SUFFER in the DPS department, and it's very easy to piss people off tripping them up as you whip and nay nay around a monster, so be mindful and understand this weapon must be used correctly to excel.
That's entirely based off of my experience, so take it with a grain of salt, but I will say I have been playing for over a decade and have used every weapon extensively, even if I perpetually seem to suck ass with certain types. Elemental damage is entirely situational, use it to capitalize weaknesses or set up opportunities like using a sleep weapon to knock out a monster, then bombing its face to pieces after. Dragon and Blast seem to be the best 'all-rounder' elemental types just in general, Thunder is generally good too but.. well Thunder has some issues at the moment related to framepacing/stutters. Otherwise, the best element is typically the one the monster is weakest to. It's hard to recommend any one weapon type to a person.
The switchaxe has a pokey explosion thing which is nice but the charge blade has a planet cracker that hits monsters with the might of a thousand angry trucks.
It's like a level 3 greatsword charge but with more range and angrier.
Outside of that, you're in a mode which has a ton of mobility, especially compared to that clunky switchaxe axe mode, you can power yourself up so your sword attacks never bounce and you can also block which is always a nice bonus.
It takes some learning tho, basic weapon mechanics are never explained in-game so you'll have to research online.
