Fishing rod vs Net

Anyone found a place where you must use the rod and bait?
So far I've not found anything I can't simply catch with the net instead...

Any real purpose to the rod and different baits?

The rod is used so you don't scare away all the fish... Net will only catch 1 fish at a time, unless you aim it REALLY well. Then all the fish will swim away and be lost to you until you wait and return

Rod won’t scare away fish, so you can get every fish from a pond if you wanted. Net c an catch whatever you aim it at, and scares everything else away

There are some places where you have to use rod:

- every fishing spot in the Rotten Vale
- every fishing spot in the Elder’s Recess
- the ocean in Ancient Forest

Some of the fish can only be gotten from rod because of that, like the Achievement fish Pelicanths, and Platinum Fish, Gold Fish, and I believe Golden Fry

Some fish appear to ignore common bait. Pelicanths will not go to a normal bobber for a very long time but immediately swim for a baitbug. It might take several tries to get a Gunpowderfish, but if you use their specific bait is is easy

I have not seen a reason for Arowana bait, it seems useless

There some places in the Vale, ( Acid ), that don't actually require a rod

Is there really? Is it the little pool in the cave with the Golden Fry? I suppose a net could reach in that one

It's on the way to the Tailraider hideout, where you offer the food

So MOST fishing places in the Rotten Vale require a rod then, not all xD

But I believe all of the ones in the elder recess do, and you aren’t getting a tuna or marlin out of the ocean with a net xD so rod is definitely needed if you want all the fish, or the achievement fish

Behind the first camp is a small area where you can use the net to catch fish, the fisherman also spawns in that pond to ask you to catch for him

In the Rotten Vale it's not hard to fish with the net. I caught the golden one there yesterday.
So far I haven't noticed any out-of-reach place. Granted I have not searched *that* thorough.
If you just aim upwards with the net you can reach a bit further and usually catch 1-2 fishes.

Fishing is OK.

I just used the net the whole time on PC. I used the rod on PS4, and when trying for one of the special fish ran out of that supposedly special bait. So I tried regular bait and got the fish...so the special bait wasn't special.

Then I realized something was messed up. If the special bait isnt' special, maybe the rod isnt. So I just use the net. It works well. I don't do a lot of fishing, just to finish the quests.

I could see if you really wanted to capture all the fish, the rod may be better, but brute force with the net works.

Gonna check a bit more and see.. but it's interesting though. I sure hope there are places where you actually have to use the rod and certain baits. I like it, but currently find it useless :P

i can almostt guarantee the Pelicanths that spawns in the far back pool is out of reach xD

as is the farthest back area of the ocean for Ancient Forest

And i'm pretty sure the Tuna and Pelicanths, the Bombfish, and Platinumfish in Elder's Recess 8 camp are out of reach for a Net
