Who is hosting the server?
Hi, I am just curious about the question mentioned in the title.

Start from 2 hours ago, I have been joining random SOS for tempered monster investigation and none of the players I have met disconnected.

So according to my experience, whenever the online player number is lower than 200k, I will never experience any connection error.

I have heard some people are saying MHW is using P2P connection or whatever, but from my experience, I highly doubt that. I believe that there is a solid hosting server which is managing all those multiplayer connection. And whenever a certain number of player exceed the limit, the server start to have weird error.

So my question is, who is hosting the server? Steam? Capcom? Personally I believe that it is not the game to be buggy, but it is the server, the hardware being the major problem.

When in quest - The host, or group leader, is the server. If he has a bad internet connection like wifi, behind a controlled ISP( School network/etc) or is far away from you, chances of you having a disconnect error (I guess that's how they handle desync) is also high.

The lobby is hosted server, most likely provided by valve... Usually you only see a specific error code if you disconnect while doing nothing or the only one in the lobby. The chat/player list is accessible in quest, so you are connected to both the valve server and the host server.

For example, when I host games, people don't disconnect on me at all. Either in SOS or joining in via the lobby. But when I join someone's SOS or via lobby, it depends who's the host player. I have a chance to be disconnected from both the host player and lobby (becomes offline) or just from the host and I return to the session lobby(still online).

Game using Steamworks P2P... Isn't it pretty obvious? Since steam groups and steam chat/friend invite are used.... https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/multiplayer
