It always says level up when starting. You need to pick up tracks for a while, then go back to town to check. If you have Hunter helmet on with Scholar skill, and pants for Scenthound, or Scenthound charm, just go around picking up tracks for 5-10 minutes. At the end of a mission it will say "xxx leveled up! Go visit your ecological research center."
so only the tracks matter? you dont have to kill a mon to level up research?
Tracks are worth 10 points, Kill is 60 points, Capture is 90 points. I really don't bother killing or capturing because following the monster around and picking up their tracks is much faster in the long run. Unless you are tracking something like a Ratholos/Rathian, that leave 1-3 tracks and just fly off immediately then maybe killing/capturing is faster.
Edit: for me, even against those flying wyverns, I still just follow them around while using campsites to teleport to. I just find it faster.
