If you want to go beyond then play Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter 2 from PS2.
If you dont want multiplayer.... dont play any of the older ones. Start with Tri. Otherwise your gonna have to deal with stuff like xlink kai.
MH4U is a very good monster hunter with a lot of content, teaches you the game well and is fun.
It still has an active community on 3DS if I'm not wrong. And some badasses monsters. (Like in XX)
MH3U is a good looking monster hunter (Wii U) (also 3DS, but doesnt look that good) it has a good roster full of nostalgic monsters from the 1st and 2gen. I'd say overall 4U is technically better.
And of course, freedom unite, the one that we all played at some point, some people played the first MH on PS2 but it's rare and in all honestly, was a mess compared to FU, FU is still a mess but much better kind of mess.
And MH, on PS2, I guess some people feel nostalgic about this game, I don't really, it's for masos, but it's the root of MH I guess.
The only ones where you can enjoy MP actively are MHX,MHXX,MH4U,
MHFU on emulators with friends. You can also emulate MHX/MHXX and play with your friends. (If you own the game of course, legal stuff blabla.)
MHP3rd (PSP; ♥♥♥ only but there are english patches) is a good game too and definitely feels less old.
Haven't played Tri.
3U+4U are decent games too, but I prefer the PSP titles and the 3DS controls never felt as good to me personally.
Generations has a lot of content, is way too easy because of added skills and hunting styles and it contains over the top monsters or versions of already existing monsters (imo).
Can be fun, but there was no challenge in the whole game and just doing regular quests never cost me more than ~8 minutes at most! And I'm not even talking about endgame speedruns.
If you like the gameplay of MHW and don't care too much about graphics, go and play the older games. You should give MHFU and MHP3rd a try.
If you're more intrigued by the stunning areas, details and interaction with the environment in MHW, the older titles might dissapoint you and you shouldn't try them out.
That's just my two cents.
