Affinity sort of acts like a damage multiplier for your raw damage stat, or more specifically it is crit chance, tho the way it works is a bit different. Here's a guide that may help you:
https://www.vg247.com/2018/08/08/monster-hunter-world-affinity-guide-what-is-affinity/
If Affinity is positive, then there are "chances" (much like a crit) to do more damage, and whatever your Affinity number is, is what your base damage will be raised by percentage-wise.
If it is negative, it works the opposite, there's a chance of doing less damage at the percentage equal to your negative Affinity.
at 200 true raw, 2 affinity = 1 true raw.
just remember without crit status or crit element, those damage type will not crit, just your raw damage, so high raw damage weapons with decent affinity are usually preffered.
for instance, you could equip 3 pieces of teostra's armor to activate a set bonus that stops your weapon from losing sharpness when it lands a crit. pair that with a high affinity melee weapon and skills like weakness exploit and you will find yourself doing more damage with less downtime to sharpen
But don't fill slots with Critical Eye.... is a waste.
Now with affinity, and the right gear/better gear, it'd be even higher. (but i hate dober, and like my pointy viking (nergigante) set.
Affinity is good - and you definitely don't want negative affinity (granted some sorta negate it for draw attacks) but it only really picks up later in the game at high attack weaponry.
With Weakness Expose and Maximium Might you can negate easy the negative affinity... making the Diablo weapons the best right now.
but overall it all depends on what you want to crit for, damage, special effects like with crit status/element/masters touch, and what kind of weapons your using it for.
You waste less slots using WE and MM, giving you more room for another good skills plus Atk. Boost 4 (never go beyond that)
