when i was a kid in 199x i prefer to PLAY than WATCH how other kids play Mortal Kombat 1-3 on Sega Megadrive.
and now i watch only youtube and only for guides, not "let's plays".
Let's plays of games with a decent chunk of story in them like JRPGs or western rpgs are enjoyable for the players reaction especially when they have huge twists like the dangan ronpa games Imo.
Nowadays, I watch for a few more reasons. I'll watch someone play Liberal Crime Squad, I don't enjoy playing the game myself, but watching someone have fun with it has me enjoy watching. Sometimes I'll watch someone play an obscure game, just to see if I want to play it myself. Maybe I'm on the fence about buying a game, so I'll watch someone I generally agree with play it and see if they enjoy it. Other times I just watch because I enjoy someone's personality or their take on life.
Edit: I agree with the two above me as well, streamer interaction is very important in my opinion. If they're not interacting with their viewers, what's even the point of streaming and not just uploading to youtube?
Reactions to certain events are fun as well, whether it be a story point, or someone getting ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over by game mechanics.
you can just type "%game_name% playthrough\letsplay" and voila.
really, what the reason of streams?
-Today i'm gonna have fun in a %game%, stay with me and donate for more streams!!!©
wat?
and all those chat overlays saying "why you doing %something% instead of %other_thing%??"
or "what's your PC config my game lags as hell and you have 144fps!"
or "show your boooooobs!1!"
i know what i'm talking about, i've watched some streams other days and i decided it's a real bullcrap, %game_name% doesn't matter
just imagine Skyrim stream where some stranger gonna complete some quest.
20minutes of talking and preparations, 10 minutes of goin' to the quest location
then 10 minutes of dungeon crawling with stupid comments and then he dies in some stupid trap and reloading.... oh welp, i'd turn it off in first 5 minutes.
Hell for example I'd be more interested in Cryaotics stream of Yakuza 0 than his stream of overwatch since I don't like games like overwatch but I love the hell out of Yakuza's story and would love to see how he reacts to the plot and the crazy sidestories alongside twitch chat. (and what a ride it was a dev even joined chat at one point and was surprised how many was enjoying the karaoke mini game lol)
Wow, if that's your experience in streams no wonder you can't see why people like watching them.
Personally, I have never found someone through their stream alone and thus have never watched a strangers stream. Most of the time I watch people who've done let's plays on youtube but have moved over to streaming due to interactivity being better.
Sure there are still questions like "why you doing %something% instead of %other_thing%??", but usually it's asked as a question by someone wanting to be informed so they themselves can play better. Occasionaly it is someone who believes they know better, but usually that's not the case.
I too have watched people stream The Elder Scrolls, mostly Daggerfall. They usually go in with a challenge they set for themselves like minimum agility or minimum speed. And while I could just watch the VoD or wait for them to upload to youtube, I'd rather watch while interacting with them and the community in chat that has fostered for years.
With MH all you can really talk about are the monsters and the meta. And memes too i guess.
