Question about mounting.
I'm a little bit confused about the whole mounting mechanic. I am using the Insect Glaive, I generally know what spots to hit in the air in order to mount as well. But I feel like there is something I don't know.

Usually, I go for the foodskill Felyne Rider to make mounting even easier, yet I only mount max. twice for a whole hunt.

While I have a friend I play with, he's using the chargeblade, not having felyne rider either, mounting monsters all the time, mostly with sliding.

Am I missing something important or is this just stupid luck?

It's probably the SwitchAxe attack ,in blade mode, that make you mount on a specifc part of the monster Just for the duration of "that" attack
by the way with this attack you're vulnerable to monster attack (so it's not VERY op)

Lel it was Switchaxe before your edit. (anyway i'll leave the comment )

With the Charge blade he can slide and do a jump attack (Triangle + CIrcle Or Y+B) only on zones where you can slide
Not talking about the Slide attack that you do with Circle (Dualshock) B (Xbox controller)
By the way I'm a chargeblade user and you can't mount monster without a jump attack

They most likely put a timer on mounting a monster because the first hit or two from above usually gets you onto the monster but after that it's far far more rare.

Most likely a balance feature because if you could keep riding a monster it'd remove much of the difficulty from the game.
Mount happens when you deal enough mount damage to hit the threshold. The amount of mount damage required is weapon dependent - weapons with limited mounting attacks (mostly through sliding or ledge jumping) will likely have higher chances to trigger the mount, while weapons like IG that can do mounting damage all the time will take a little more time to trigger the mount. In fact I think most sliding/jumping attacks have increased mount damage.

Also when you're hitting them with your jumping attacks you're building mount for others too, so if they land a mounting attack after all your work it will trigger more easily.

P.S. mounting only twice per hunt in MP is totally normal. After two mounts the threshold becomes too high to ever trigger.

edit: and yes, there's also a cooldown for mounts, so no need to spam mounting attacks right after he got back up.

This game nerf abit on Insect Glaive since you can continously jump into the air. Slower weapons like GS,1-2 charged jump slash can get a ride faster than Insect Glaive. It could also be luck, like you are lowering the mount resistance of the monster and your friend managed to get the hit needed to mount
In order to mount with IG the very last hit of the helicopter move must land while the threshold is filled.
Mounting is like a status, where you build up to a threshold and mount once you pass it. If you're spamming that Advancing slash where you spin the blade and launch yourself back into the air with the final hit, then that one does very little mounting damage. Stick to the Jumping slash and you'll deal more damage on your way down, and therefore more mounting damage.

I don't know much about the chargeblade, but if its single hits are stronger, then he's more likely to mount since he's simply dealing more damage in a single blow.
