Vaal Hazak and put regen augments on your weapons. And if your hunting Teostra put on some fire resistance gems too

Gunlance(spread or long, use shelling only)
Artillery 3
Guard 4-5
Guard Up
Health augment(the more the better)
Health 3x
Charge 3 if you're using long
Health booster or rocksteady mantle
Golden baby blanket

Everything over this is pure convenience and yes, you can fit more
My personal choice is earplugs 5.
You don't need more than Guard 3 for any AT elder. Guard 5 is only required for ATKT and Behemoth tanking.
Also Hazak self regen is pretty meh.

You'll have to kill monster at some point. With full defense you're more likely to run out of time, especially if you don't go all in.

You don't, but less time you spend staggered, even slightly, means more time you can attack.

Absolutely not a problem with arty3 shelling only GL build.

Wrong. The only thing this applies to is soloing Behemoth, Extreme Behemoth, AT Kush and AT Xeno. I've had my defensive lance build with only weakness exploit 3 and peak performance 3 as the offensive skills. The rest is pure defensive skills. I've done all monsters with plenty of spare time left except those 4 listed above. I did AT Vaal in 12 minutes when the time cap is still so far.

I've seen enough players in SoS and pug lobbies that barely managed to stay alive even with full def gear. I highly doubt they could make it solo in the given time.

If you are bad driver that crashes into trees all the time, does that means the car is bad and can't drive straight?

Inability to use defensive gear doesn't mean defensive gear is bad.
It just means you can't make invincible tank that facetanks everything and lives.

Well said!

To add to your post, most people in pugs are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. DB and Longsword can be good but I see so many people cart with them. IDK what's up with DB and Longsword players but they happen to be the worse players I play with. They are cart machines...

I don't know how good of a "driver" OP is. I just made a general point. Offense is greatly rewarded in MH with stagger.

The best defensive gear won't carry you if you get oneshot or stand in every danger possible. At this point a good offense is just as good if not better.

Getting oneshot with the best defensive gear? Wot?

For my general Anti-AT Defensive setup I use full KT A set besides boots which are KT Y. I usually have it setup with 7 def and 3 vit for maxing general defence, but I may change out def deco's for general elemental res decos some times. Works for everything but Luna and Val. For those two I have a more specialized setup ea.

But in anycase if I was going to recommend any 1 piece of armor for a general defensive set it would be the KT Y boots. They prevent burn status, you can walk on fire/lava without taking damage, and they take the place of cool drinks entirely. They are even more useful than what I make it sound like on here. They make any fire spouting elder dragon much easier especially Luna/Xeno.

In terms of solid defence, a Lance or a Gunlance with Guard Up and Guard 5 is practically unbreakable. There are also some hammers etc that have +30 Defence baked into them, which can be increased more with augments etc.

Most armour is irrelevant because it all upgrades to the same flat 90 Defence each piece, as far as I know, too. The Defence skill is also fairly worthless, it takes too many levels to reach max potency in my opinion. Better off slotting in something like X Resistance, Health Boost and maybe if you have some damn faith, Divine Blessing. Health Boost is the best defensive skill in the game though, providing you keep your health topped off, you can survive a great many enemy one shots with it.

You can also go full tank with a niche survivor build that incorporates Vaal Hazak's Super Vitality with a Lunastra "Ruin" weapon with Hasten Recovery baked into it, along with Recovery Up, Health Boost and Recovery Speed while using either a Defensive or Health Regen augment. I guess.

Really though it comes down to your canteen bonus, your potions and buffs, the mantles you bring, and then if you brought appropriate skills though. It's not very often you downright need a ridiculous ultra tank build, even against stuff like Extremoth. Interesting playstyle though.

There isn't a single weapon that doesn't have bad players using it online. With LS and Bow having the highest usage of course they are the most encountered scrubs but most GLs I see online use Vaal set bonus, shell twice into Wyrmstake and then eat a hit and die.

Examples can be made for every weapon so don't think that some weapons are used by higher skilled players only because you see less bad players using them.
