Use a fire weapon, not dragon.
In the area just before his nest (can't remember number, sorry) there's 2 spikes hanging from the ceiling. drop them on Vaal for big chunks of damage and free knockdowns.
Vaal is big and slow and clumsy, all of his attacks have big tells. every time you fight it and lose, you're getting better because you learned. Don't worry about it!
General tips when you're stuck against any monsters:
Make sure you're using the health 3 skill (3 level one gems'll do it or the charm fully upgraded is already level 3) gives you +50hp and stacks with food buffs/max potions
Fully upgrade armor, use all your armor spheres. augment it and upgrade it even further
Health augment your weapons
divine blessing 3 if you have the space after hp gems
Having vitality3 can offset it though, remember to nom nom on food to get more hp too.
Staying on his side and going nuts has usually worked out well enough for me, anywhere near his front is usually the main danger zone, just get out if you see him standing up on two legs since he'll probably do the ground AOE breath.
depends on how he's murdering you, describe how he gets you? is it just the stun?
suggest attacking his midsection from the side, nullberry anytime you catch his tuberculosis right away. don't make contact with him if you can, don't let that stun stat build up.
his poison cloud when he shoots at the ground is unblockable without 'guard up', so dive or just run away.
also don't forget to hit him with the two teeth in the first area. knock him down twice for free if you make sure he's not doing a big animation first.
mount him at least once. plenty of ledges to use in 2 of the stages where you fight him
at the skeleton mouth you can knock down two teeth.
thats 4 fairly easy ways to knock him down with the palico sleep giving you a chance to sleep bomb him.
restock and you can even bomb him again at the end
you can make armor from those beetles that attack you that resists his effluvial health reducing gimmick. make the vaal legs first chance you get once you do manage to beat him for future fights against him.
if using an elemental weapon like bow or daggers use fire NOT DRAGON. he is immune to dragon until you break a part so its a waste considering how long that takes.
range weapons have as always a dirty advance
stay at mid distance to the head and none of his attacks will ever hit you.
melee users better stay at side of the belly to avoid getting hits from his tail whips or claw attacks
dont miss the 2 rock traps for 2 easy ko's in area 14
There are two hanging ...teeth, I think... in the place you initially encounter it, you can drop them on it to topple it and deal a large amount of damage.
There's not to much more than to learn his moveset, it telegraphs its attacks more heavily than most monsters and pretty much every attack has a unique audio cue.
Additionally, I prefer to fight him with Lance-type weapons, but that's likely my personal bias.
Otherwise, bring a Cleansing Booster and Nulberries to eliminate its effects when it procs on you.
Honestly, although I hate to say it, the Longsword is extremely effective against him. You take a braindead weapon and use it on a braindead boss fight, you can't really go wrong - just spam your spirit slashes until you are fully powered up, and then use your spirit helm breaker on his tail or his head until he dies. Bonus points if you bring a longsword with the fire element.
In the area just before his main room where he sleeps, there's two hanging pillars on the ceiling. Hitting him with either will knock him down and do a considerable amount of damage, hitting him with both will likely break his wings - or put them close to being destroyed. It will also shorten the fight a fair bit.
The only stuff to watch out for is his breath attack, and his breath "bomb" where he rears up and breathes onto the floor, creating an expanding AoE attack that does a generous amount of damage to you, while knocking you back and probably inflicting effluvium on your HP if you don't have resistance to it. Watch out for those while you lazily slash him to death, anyway. He also has a charge attack that's nasty if it connects, but heavily telegraphed and easy to avoid.
Also it goes without saying but avoid the blue acid pools, especially in the area he typically flees to halfway through the fight. Getting clipped by him might not kill you - but rolling into the acid after getting hit and being low health presents a nasty risk from being carted, etc.
