I played both, and M&K was way uncomfy than my Steam Controller.
For example, can you play in an almost laid position? Hahah.
Now seriously, Hack and Slash games were always better with controller to me. Games WITHOUT the necessity to aim.
Bowgun, bow... A nightmare with controller.
But otherwise, controller is the best. Much easier to choose stuff from your hotbar. This F1-F4 with 1-9 buttons are ultra uncomfortable. It is literally impossible to use these during a battle.
I have a razer trinity with 14 buttons layout. This was the only solution I found to counter this.
1-9 buttons are for item use, and 10-14 buttons to change menus.
This how I see it.
kb+m works too but you kinda have to rebind some of keys
If you guys are having a hard time with mouse and keyboard. Here is a trick, buy a razer naga or any mouse that has 12 extra buttons.
Controller works better for melee. Simpler controls and everything within reach. Chaining combo is easy. It has longer shortcut execution time.
For melee use a controller for more freedom of movement.
You will need to spend time redoing binds/config/etc. to get settings that are sensible. Preferably you will probably need a gaming mouse to bind other buttons and get proper access to your item bar, therun button, etc.. Even then it won't be perfect, but it will be liveable. Despite all of the headache getting it setup, I found it worth the pain because...
Camera controls in action games are so much better with a mouse (if the game is ported properly). Rather than having to do a weird claw grip with your index finger or take your thumb off the buttons you actually want to press, you just make micro adjustments to your camera as you play without thinking about it. With M&K I am always facing the direction I want and I can focus my attention on fighting the monster. I despise having to triangulate between my character and camera facing to figure out what direction I will move— a lot easier to just face the direction I want to go and know that W means "go that way".
The game is designed with a controller in mind so that will serve you just fine but I much prefer the PC setup.
