x marks the what?

sometimes i find different x marks on the map like currently in the rotten vale i see one that is red and blinking, is it useless or a secret that i dont know how to uncover?

A red X marks the spot where a way is currently blocked off.
Some are opened by a monster (Nerg for example) Others are blocked off for a reason (egg quests)

Also, if you've investigated a monster enough for it to show on your minimap, an X will appear on their destination when they change zones to eat, drink, rest, etc. It's useful to decide whether to follow a retreating monster by foot or tp to a nearby camp and meet them there.

i guess it was blocked off then because i used a barrel bomb and a wyvern strike and i couldn't break it and it doesnt look like a monster can get into that small space

The red X's in Rotten Vale and Elders Recess are blocked off areas that you will gain access to as you progress the main storyline
