I just got one around the 35th, still need 4 more. During the entire time before that I only saw one person get one during a carve.

Plunderblade gadget always.
I force my palico to use it each hunt when I need gems, and every 3 to 5 hunts I get 1 gem from that alone.
Tempered Nergi investigations and optional quests are bad for farming gems.
Gather regular Nergi tracks, and only do investigations with gold box rewards.

Alternatively, do your limited bounties. If you didn't, then you missed out on the last spring event.
I farmed up 8 gold wyvernian prints from that in 2 weeks.

Hell, I play with friends, and they're looking for certain mats, but don't get em, and I do...

Thus, I am known as their worst enemy... Someone who gets everything, even though i don't look for them....

I mean hey... I was an MH god in the first game (Ps2), why not continue to be one? Right? >.>.
