Massive FPS Drops w/ Capable Hardware
Hello, recently, I've been finding myself having even more issues with frame stabilization in this game. I've done my fair share of research about my computer and its hardware, and successfully undervolted it to control temperatures. I was led to believe that was the problem, however, even at ~75 degrees Celsius I still get massive frame drops out of nowhere.
I noticed into about an hour of playing, my FPS became increasingly unstable whilst trying to kill a Rathian in the Wildspire Waste. I'm still unclear as to what the issue is, as I have my games at a somewhat modest setting already. Can someone please help? Thank you!

My Computer specs:

Acer Predator Helios 300:

GPU - Nvidia GTX 1060

CPU - Intel i7-7700HQ Processor

RAM - 16 GB (8*2)

i think its normal for a notebook. its getting to hot and the clock speed from your cpu/gpu getting reduced. maybe an air cooling thing for you notebook should help

The game has horrid optimization and Capcom doesn't give a ♥♥♥ about it.
It's like they think to themselves: "get a very high end PC or get bent."
I have a similar RIG to yours and I can get 60 fps at 1080 90% of the time.
the other 10% is hyper dense foliage areas where it dips to the 50's and
Lunastra. Sometimes I can't even finish the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ fight because Luna is a particle effect factory. it crashes my game 10 min. into the fight. Nothing will be done about it sadly.
I suggest you set volume rendering to lowest or disable altogether.
Disable Anti Aliasing, it's broken and a resource hog, set AA through nvidia control panel instead.
set LOD to variable and texture quality to 1024, finally Ambient occlusion to Low or disable altogether. This is the most balanced look and a good mix of mid to high settings.
Drops will be short and only a few FPS. Except Lunastra. Get everything you need from that bltch and then stay away from her for good.
Hope this helped.

The Intel i7-7700HQ is probably downclocking to it's base frequency (2.8GHz).
This doesn't necessarily have to do with temperatures, this mechanism also kicks in to reduce power draw.

MH:W absolutely shreds CPUs because of it's shoddy programming and a quadcore at 2.8 to 3GHz will not be able to maintain 60 fps (and even at the max turbo of 3.8GHz it might not be able to do it).

You can get MSI Afterburner and use the on-screen display to check your CPU frequency in-game. Confirm whether or not this is actually the issue.

You can try to tone down some of your graphics setting like turning textures to fps prioritization turning off ambient occulsion and low shadows can help with some fps

Try older Nvidia drivers, google those "drivers 398.36", maybe it helps you, helped me.

My issue right now is my CPU with the effects that the witcher mission does. Smooth 60 FPS, but the SECOND I get those red feathers after talking with the NPC my framerate tanks to ~10 FPS. Kinda hoping someone makes a mod to address this, but given I've not found any mods that address the tornado's from Kusha, I doubt that'll be the case...

It seems to be stable until about an hour and a half into gameplay.

Originally I was on that one, but the latest version actually seems to run it faster.

I used this reddit post to mess with my settings based around it, sadly I can't find it anymore but there's a lot of them with detailed lists to help and some guides here on Steam, all you need to know is Volumetric Fog is TRASH and you definitely need SpecialK installed and activate the fix for the threads the game tries to create. Game looks beautiful and runs at 60 nearly all the time unless it doesn't wanna. Sometimes it'll just arbitrarily not play ball but that's life with a terrible port.

Where is the setting to turn off the fog?

You can get a pretty good idea of how each of the settings impacts performance and visual quality from this video

The special k mod can also help with performance issues

Lower Shadows.
You won't notice the difference but your PC will.
