They're easy to make, and it depends on your gun. If you're using the deviljho gun, they're fantastic.

I've got a question: how is cluster damage calculated?
  • Does it count as an explosive item for skill purposes? If not, which skills boost cluster damage?
  • Can cluster bombs crit?
  • Are they even affected by monster hitzone modifiers, or does it deal full damage regardless of you hit the monster ala LBG tripmines?
  • Can your HBG block attacks while you're aiming cluster ammo? (if so, that's absolutely disgusting)

1. No, it does not count as explosive item;
2. Only initial hit can critical hit which is only 2 damage instead of 1;
3. They are not affected by monster hit zone modifiers and they always deal full damage;
4. You cannot block when aiming with cluster ammo;

Only flat attack power boosts cluster damage, so you want the highest raw gun you can get for it.
No explosives can crit.
No, they're not affected by hitzone. Neither are gunlance shells, sticky shot explosions or barrel bombs.
No, you'll get hit while in mortar stance.

I can answer some of these.
Clust, to my surprise, does a fixed amount of damage.
Level 1: 21 per bomb, 3 bombs
Level 2: 24 per bomb, 4 bombs
Level 3: 31 per bomb, 5 bombs

Idk if you can block attacks while aiming them, but you really shouldn’t be using a shield to begin with.
Clust does not do fixed damage. It does damage scaled by your attack power.

Fair enough - being able to smite the monster with 5x70 damage from across the zone would be pretty ridiculous if you could also block while doing it lol

But that raises another question...

If Cluster 3 with Gluttony does 300-400 damage per shot... doesn't every non-tempered monster in the game sans Xeno / KT / Behemoth die before you even use up your 13 shots?

Nah. That's only 3900-5200 damage. Some monsters have closer to the 8000 range for health. Moreso for arch tempered monsters.

Why are you using cluster with something other than Dark Devourer? Or is "Gluttony" a non-english name for the DD? I don't know what Aepoh is talking about but Cluster bombs are one of the highest and cheesiest damage options in MHW.

It is called the RNG cannon for a reason though cause you will be using the Xeno Y spare shot skill to get more or rely on a farcaster to restock if you fail to get the kill. Increase the cheese with rocksteady + health booster and just fire at point blank to ensure all your bomblets hit.

If you need examples just find any cluster hbg solo on youtube.

Lavasioth farming and Extremoth says hello.
Xilo The Odd May 8, 2019 @ 2:48pm
for farming them, youll want your farm setup for gunpowder 3 if you dont want to buy it, and possibly some stick ammo and clust ammo.

then you send cats exclusively to elders recess to locations with lots of plants, they bring back a good amount of sticky, wyvern and clust ammo mats from elders recess from the herb icon portions.

...Or you could just use the harvest box like a normal person...

Cluster bombs aren’t good in the traditional sense that they do a lot of damage (their DPS is not good due to how many you can carry at once)
Or carry materials and craft more while you're shooting...

Cluster bombs are great when you're alone, since the monster is both made of glass and has the resistance of paper - you'll smack it all over the place once you land a solid hit.

In multiplayer, eh not so much. You'll still be landing some of the highest DPS you can manage using it, but you'll also (probably) be robbing other players of their own DPS as you send them flying unless you know how to aim well - such as hitting say, Lunastra's wings when she falls down instead of the head / body.

Cheap and easy to make, although you can't carry too many - Spare Shot definitely helps for this. I don't know which HBG is best for cluster bombing, since I never bother with it personally (I prefer Glutton HBG for raw DPS) but I'm sure it has either already been answered already in this thread, or is only an internet search away, right?

There's a reason most generic speedruns of X monster is done using cluster bombs in solo. It's because it does killer DPS and messes up the monster big time. Even without speedrunning, it makes farming some of the bigger, nastier monsters a doddle, honestly. With the right enthusiam and practice, you can even solo Behemoth with it without much issue, etc.

thats what i said if you read it dumb dumb. this entire thing i said = harvest box getting you shot AND tailraiders getting you shot. effectively increasing your harvest amount a bit at the cost of 600 more research points for the tailraiders.
