Looking for Crown Hunting Advice
Hey everyone. This is the first game in the Monster Hunter series that I'm going for all gold crowns in, and I was looking for a bit of clarification and advice. First, is it true that you need to do only investigations with a gold AND silver box, and those with 3+ purple boxes, in order to get gold crowns? I've heard mostly reports of this being true, but have also read a handful of people that have said they got them from expeditions and investigations that have all bronze.

Second, if you are required to do investigations to find these gold crowns, is there any possible way at all to find investigations for a certain monster? For example, I currently have run through all my non-tempered quests for Nergigante. Is there any way to specifically farm non-tempered investigations for Nergigante, or at least improve the chances of finding one? To my knowledge, it's entirely random, but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Overall, I think that's all I need to know, as I know how to measure some of them, but if anyone has any tricks or tips they learned, feel free to mention them cause I can use all the help I can get! Thanks!

The average amount of hunts necessary for both crowns is around 50 for one monster, but can easily extend to 150+ if you have bad luck.

you need crowns from all monsters except
xeno shiva, zorah magdaros, devil jho, lunastra, behemoth, kulve taroth
Err no, I did ALL of my Large and small crown around 100 hours when I become serious.

1. Pay attention to EVENT quest.
These are 100%, so only need to run them once:
Egg Lovers United Kulu-Ya-Ku (Giant Crown)
A Rush of Blood Odogaron (Small Crown)
The Greatest Jagras Great Jagras (Giant Crown)
The Name's Lavasioth! Lavasioth (Giant Crown)
USJ Blazing Azure Stars! Azure Rathalos (Small Crown)

These have increased chance of Small and Giant Crown, you can run them at random OR snipe a specific monster then return from quest:
Deep Green Blues
Coral Waltz
Effluvial Opera
Wildspire Bolero
Rock N' Roll Recess

2. Once you have accumulated enough Small and Large, it is then down to specific monster. Watch YouTube video to determine at what size will be considered to be Large or Small crown for the specific monster you want to hunt.

Say you want to hunt a Large monster.
2.1 Watch the video for it, see at what height it will considered to be Large. (See how does it compares to your character's height).
2.2 Open any investigation (Tempered, or Normal that has at least one Gold rewards)
2.3 Compare the size of the monster.
2.4 If it is smaller than the one that was shown in the video, ABANDON quest. If it looks big, kill it.

The two that gives me the hardest time were Kirin and Nergi. I've killed 15+ decently large looking Kirin (solo) before scoring that Large crown. Nergi took me... 30+ kills

Gold crowns, as I've heard from data miners, don't come in arch-tempered monsters (the orange glow).

There are usually events for gold crowns. A Rush of Blood guarantees small Odo. USJ Star guarantees large Dodo and mini Blue Los. The Greatest Jagras guarantees what's not too hard to figure out. The Name's Lavasioth guarantees the giant lava catfish (but correct me if I'm wrong.) Behemoth quest line will give you guaranteed Kulu. There are more, but check the quest board.

The easy quests to farm gold crowns, although not guaranteed are the events as well. There are usually quests of four monsters strung together in each map. The description will say so. Do them.

You're right about there not being a way to acquire specific investigations.

There should be a crown farming event every week, though. Those don't cover elder dragons and there are a handful of exceptions afaik (example being Black Diablos), but they're the easiest way to farm crowns for what monsters you need. This week's is the Elder's Recess one, and it'll rotate to other areas with each week.

From what I know and have seen Elder Dragons are just a crap shoot on if they are crowned or not, campfire stories claim higher reward means more likely to encounter one.

For the 'normal' not so elder monsters you wanna farm the event quests like mad, Deep Green Blues / Wildspire Bolero / Coral Waltz / Effluvial Opera / Rock N' Roll Recess.

The best way to get investigations is to pick up tracks in an expedition/hunt and to break parts while hunting the monster. You're not guaranteed an investigation with the monster/crown combination you want though. You can end up getting any monster that roams that area.
There are also two event quests that I *think* cycle every week. They're gathering quests but there'll be a lot of tracks in the area to pick up. One of them is tempered while the other isn't.

As for the crowns, even if all bronze investigations do have a chance of giving out golden crowns, it's probably the case that investigations with gold+silver will have a better chance at giving you golden crown. Another combination that allegedly has higher chances is 3 gold 1 bronze, but those are pretty hard to come by.

That doesn't mean you have to discard the other investigations though, they can still be used to farm for more investigations.

Another thing to note is that every week there will be a multi-target quests(usually 4-5 targets) that have much higher chances of giving you golden crowns, so be sure to do those if you need a crown from any of the available monsters. The best thing about crowns is that as long as you kill the monster, doesn't matter if you return from quest or finish the whole quest, the crown will still register. So you can just hop into the quest, kill the monster you need and return from quest. So these event quests work out really well.

The best way to get the majority of the gold and silver crowns isnt about investigations.

There are specific missions that are designed to have increased crown rewards.

Then there are some missions like The Greatest Jagras and Code Red which have garuanteed crown rewards.

So do a bit of research and work through them.first.

For the left overs which are mostly Elder Dragons you do need to be doing Investigations. But Elder Dragon Investigations are fairly easy. Just farm Tempered Nergigante .

Thanks for all the advice! I suppose I underestimated the importance of event quests, so I'll try to use those to my advantage. I already have quite a few crowns randomly, but my main concern was the elder dragons, as they seem hard to get investigations for.

congrats you were simply lucky
lets do a poll about how long people needed for their crowns achievements

*puts on dark hood and ressurects this thread from the dead*

Does it matter if i'm hunting LR or HR? I figured LR would be faster since i kill everything and hope for some extra investigations along the way.
Geode890 Nov 9, 2019 @ 4:11pm
From what I’ve heard, the only time a gold crown of any kind even appears is in HR investigations with either a gold and a silver box, or three gold boxes, or any tempered investigation, so LR isn’t exactly viable, unfortunately. I’ve tested it a bit myself and this does seem to be the case.
