Managed to get him down 2/2 attempts tonight, and man is it a thrilling and butt-clenching encounter; there's nothing else quite like it in the game, not even AT Xeno with his one-shot beams and explosions.
I have a few tips that may help.
This is the safest option IMO, the one I go with for new/particularly difficult fights, and ultimately the one I used to down AT Nerg. I managed to get him down with the dragon eye patch and 4/5 Drachen gear with 2 carts and an added cheesy sleep bomb/retreat/sleep bomb to be safe, but I tried a second build after that that I only carted once on: eye patch + Vaal chest, arms and waist decorated with 3 recovery up, 2 (3 if you have it) divine protection, and of course 3 vitality up, among other things. I also used Uragaan legs for a total of 5 guard with the neck, but it wasn't any different from guard 3 so I'll be using something different next time, maybe Luna legs for free vitality 2 so I can add different decos (probably agitator if I have any, he's almost always enraged).
This build allows you to quickly recover from damage, as the 3 recovery up decos stack with the healing augment on your weapon and allows you to offensively recover health instead of trying to create gaps in order to pot in case you take a hit. It's really hard to create such gaps especially late in the fight.
Temporal mantle is basically a must, as it gives you free time to beat on him in nearly total safely, as well as a generous window to heal back large damage if you need it. Note that his frontal paw swipes are not countered with the mantle and do hefty damage, so watch out for those. I used vitality mantle most of the time to save on the chip damage. It also blocks a decent amount of damage from an instant dive.
Add one ear plug deco. His pre-dive roar is a light roar for some reason, and an ear plug gives you ample time to recover and sheath. You absolutely do not want to get caught out front blocking his dive, even with upgraded recovery and health - superman it every time.
The biggest thing though is that he begins to limp and tries to retreat FAR earlier than normal (don't get excited when you see the skull, he's still far from dead). I'm always back in the big room with the vitality plants and rockfalls, so I grab a crystalburst and delay him returning to his nest as many times as I can. By this point he'll be ungodly aggressive, spamming many instant dives and cycling rapidly through spines and dives. You really don't want to let him go back to the nest unless you're confident he'll die to a sleep bomb, or close to it, because it's honestly hell in there. If he makes it back to his room, I recommend sleep bombing him, retreating to camp 16, sleep bombing again etc until he's dead. It's cheesy and slow, but it's also safe.
Or if you've got the setup to cluster spam cheese him you could do that as well. I haven't tried it personally, but apparently it's basically AFK mode when done well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And in the end if you're struggling too much, honestly don't even stress about doing it. The only things you get are guild card titles and somewhat niche gamma armor, which will be replaced hopefully later this year. There isn't any layered armor because for some reason we PC plebs aren't worthy enough to get the Street Fighter content.
If you do keep pursuing it, good luck. It is doable, it just takes a lot of patience and focus.
Edit to add something I forgot - bring a farcaster with you if you need one, and restock your max and ancient pots if need be. Honestly though if you need that many, you're probably not doing well enough.
Edit 2: Tried him again for the 3rd piece I wanted and as I mentioned in the initial post I tried swapping Uragaan greaves for Luna's legs beta and the eye patch for Luna's helm alpha so I could take advantage of the increased stam cap. Turned out to be a good move since the increased stamina saved me at least once and the extended evasion 2 worked out a couple times as well. No carts this time, but still had a panic moment or two. Damage is really quite low on both the lances I tried, one being an electric one, so I'm assuming AT has increased resistances. I noticed Teostra took quite a bit less damage from a white sharpness ice lance vs a blue water lance, and staggered once or twice vs 5+ times with the water weapon, so idk.
Also watched a video of a dude using a charge blade that absolutely destroyed AT Nerg, but unfortunately I don't have the build and probably not the skill for it :(
At least that's off the checklist just in time for the big event chain coming up. Still not sure if I want to even bother with AT Daora or Luna.
Needless to say I haven't attempted fighting him again. Will leave that for another day lol.
gl has this nice feature simply keep firing while doing constant dmg and ignoring his armor.
multiplayer is a pretty rough experience because he normally does his mighty nearly instant jump attack while switching targets and kills his pure victim with a second attack if the first one wasn't enough
he has over 60k hp in multiplayer and the more he roars the faster and more powerful he becomes. It is normally in stage 3 where becomes powerful enough to instantkill everyone.
Top tip imo is that you spam Crystalburst to make sure it ain't run to the final area.
also beat him as a duo, it was tense but fun
Make sure you drop the 2 boulders on him in the first area, and initiate the Turf War in the next one. That's massive damage right there.
You can also Crystalburst him when he tries to return to his nest (where he goes psycho). This will cause him to go back to the previous area instead.
Edit: watch some speed runs its helps a lot with difficult monster
