You get plenty of both, no need to be stingy.
Gold is earned by completing missions and selling items obrained. Gold is used on crafting equipment, buying consumables and alike.
Research points (RP) is earned when you do "research/observation" actions. Eg: gathering herbs or mining, capturing monsters, breaking monster parts, special battle situations, etc. RP usually used in unlocking gameplay feature or side stuffs.
Wait, what gameplay features?
you'll want to improve your botanical research AKA the farm so you have a steady supply of important items like honey, thunderbugs and flashbugs. it can be upgraded to be able to cultivate 3 different items, along with the fertilizers which increase the yields of the specific type of item, or reduce the time taken for the item to be extracted. using the fertilizers costs research points
the argosy is basically a trade ship which brings in items depending on what you send them out for, quite similar to the tailraider safari. you can send them to bring back consumables, monster materials or trade items which are purely for selling for money. all of which are purchased with research points.
additional campsites are extremely important as they cut down your travel time. you will need to spend research points and some monster materials to unlock them via the bounty NPCs. same goes for several canteen ingredients
Zenny pays for everything else, like items from the stockpile, weapon and armour upgrades and augmentation. Zenny can be spent very rapidly in the end game, but it also is the fastest to build up a big supply of using the Bandit Mantle or the Argosy set to Trade-In items only.
You can spend Zenny or Research Points or a Meal Voucher when eating your pre-hunt meal at the canteen or camp. Recommend to never spend Research Points on this, and instead just pay with Zenny - you'll make it back tenfold from the hunt you're on anyway. Meal vouchers are for special cases when you want to eat for a specific Felyne bonus, or when you want to be nice and help out your team / other players in the session. You'll typically see them used most commonly for Arch Tempered monsters, Behemoth, Ancient Leshen and during Kulve Taroth sieges.
