Well, i tested it out now.
While I did fiddle around a little bit in the ingame setting (not much), it seems like in the end switching to exclusive fullscreen did the trick.
Played the game for nearly 2 hours, and had no major FPS drops while testing.
Besides that, switching to fullscreen gets the GPU temperature way higher than it did before it. Now when much stuff is going on ingame, GPU goes up to around 90C, which is unusually high.
Capping at 30 FPS didn't change anything.
So seems like my hardware just doesn't hold up to today, since my GPU is now around 5 years old. But i'll have to see.
Perhaps some other application was taking the focus off MH when in windowed borderless resulting in the low framerate. As for your temps, that's too hot for a 280X. Shouldn't even be hitting anywhere near that under load.
Have you cleaned the dust out of the fans? Does it have a stock cooler or do you have a better aftermarket 280X with a proper cooling solution?
Download MSI afterburner and set a custom fan curve to keep your temperatures lower, and also try running the game on lower settings and cap at 30fps at the same time as a test to see if that lowers temps (I know you said you tried 30fps but I'm not sure if you were running it on high or low).
280X should run the game just fine on low. A friend has a laptop with a 1050Ti in it and it runs MHW fine at around 60-ish fps, and the 280X is ~21% faster.
???
It's not about your hardware being too weak to run the game. Your GPU is simply throttling. 90°C is not normal for any graphics card. Check your fans and cooling in general.
From what I can tell, it wasn't throttling before. His 25fps were caused by the game being in windowed mode. He stated that he's got a significantly higher temperature (90c) after running the game in exclusive full screen even though his framerate is fine now (which is worrying because if that's true then his card isn't throttling at 90c lol).
I think his card is caked full of dust and needs a good solid blow with an air compressor.
BadLootSensei, if you go to clean your PC out make sure you jam any fans with something so that they don't spin when you're cleaning them out.
I suggest u change the thermal paste of the gpu.
my old gtx 970 has 80-90c under 100% gpu usage on mhw. After i change the thermal paste, it maxed 64c with 100% gpu usage. Big difference. No thermal throtling anymore.
Quick easy things first. He should check his airflow before trying anything more technical.
Ok, so for now, i've done several things
- Cleaned my GPU from all its dust, wasn't much, but noticable.
- Found out, that my external cooling unit, which i have built in, isn't working properly. Replaced it with an old one i had, now the GPU has extra cooling working again.
- Capped MHW at 30FPS for now, while having graphical settings at an average mix of medium/high.
MSI Afterburner shows while ingame, GPU temp doesn't go above 73C, with an average of 70C.
So in short, a cooling problem after all, which is resolved for me, atleast for now.
I'm just wondering, why the throttling stuff (with the 25FPS cap) only happens in MHW. In other games i have which are also resource intensive, this didn't happen at all, even after many hours of playing.
Anyways, thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated.
No worries. Any reason for sticking to the 30fps cap now? Should be fine to run higher frames.
70c is also much more acceptable. Wouldn't hurt to make a custom fan curve to try to get even lower temps though.
As for why MHW caused it to throttle, I don't know for sure. Either way glad it's working. :)
buy better PC. its not about optimization.. its about hardware.. if u can play Pacman from 1994 on your PC without issues, that dont mean u can play MHW on your PC without issues.. guess why.
No need for capping anymore. Uncapped it, maximum of 75C is reached.
Yep, i already did put in a custom fan curve effectifely.
So everything settled, i guess. Thanks.
Edit: Well, today I started MHW again for testing, and immediately at the title screen game gets locked at 25FPS. Restarting solved it.
No idea, why that happened. After all, mid-game the problem doesn't occur at all though.
