How to set password on SOS flare
Me and my bro just want to do some exporation and play together. We can only seem to join co-op via quests. On another thread somebody said you could shoot and SoS flare and set a password so only your friend could respond and then they could join you on expedition. Anybody know how to set password or play together in exploration?

Edit: I was completely off. When you launch a SOS Flare it says that if the quest is password locked players can join without the password. So you probably should just set up a password locked lobby and SOS Flare for your brother on expeditions. After he joins you can cancel the flare.

There's no passwords on flares, the guy in another thread probably meant that you can change option from "Always accept" to "Manually accept" when someone joins, look for it in settings

Also just cancel the SOS flare, but...I guess that's not as airtight as a password protected session, considering it's feasible that someone else could slip in secretly.

You are aware multiplayer monsters have like 250% of their base health, right? So that means you both would have to do around 125% of the monsters solo health to kill it, split between you, making it slightly more erratic and frantic tackling things in a duo, although I guess the palicos make up for that somewhat.

You don't need to fire any SOS when you're playing with someone. Just go to the same session (THAT you can password protect) and join each others quests normally
Crate your own session share the session ID to your friend or brother and you can play quest with only 2 of you

There's no way to have people join your expedition without firing SoS flare, if you want your expedition to be "private" then you either have to set join requests to be manually accepted or just cancel flare after your friend joins.
Flares ignore that your session is private.

The only way I've been able to go on an expedition with friends (without using the SOS flare) is to start a private quest with friends and complete it. This quest can be anything, but if you're looking for something that can be resolved quickly, grab something akin to "kill X vespoids", jagaras, etc.

Once the objective for the quest has been completed and the end timer is counting down, you should all choose the option "return to camp" instead of "return to base". That will put everyone who chose the former into an expedition together.

The issues with this route are 1) it's annoying having to complete a throw-away quest first just to get into an expedition and 2) you're entering an expedition blind with no idea of which NPCs or conditions will be present (which can be frustrating if you're looking for a particular item or in-map quest that only pops up under specific conditions).

Expeditions also don't handle multiplayer flawlessly. For example, you may see an NPC directing you to find doodles that will assist you in locating and befriending the grimalkynes tribe on that map, but any friends you have present will not.

You can set a password for a Lobby not an SOS flare.
SOS flare literaly is designed around random matchamking so it canot be pasworded.
If you want to play friends just make a passwordedlobby and meat up in the hunting lodge/hall hall.

Thanks all, did the manual accept and then cancel and that worked just as well. Thanks all

You probably think that you need to fire a SOS flare and have him join that. But you don't. If he's in your game session (ie: Same town) and they can join the mission from the mission board just like a normal quest after the cutscene finishes.

This we know but we wanted to hunt monsters and just explore via the expedition. We have since found out it is not a good idea to hunt monsters via expeditions so we do it now via investigations and the board
