Long Sword is also a favourite of mine in MH3U on Wii U big but quick weapon.
I was never a fan of the large slow weapons like Hammer and Greatsword though.. always found myself getting wrecked trying to use them xD
See I found the SwA to a great smooth weapon to use.
The only weapon Ive said is clunky is the Charge Blade and thats only because of how the weapon works rather than how the combat feels.
Other one would be probably Sword and Shield but as fun as it is in solo, it usually suffers greatly in multiplayer due to lack of impact and damage compared to others.
Unless you use support Wide Range build then I feel I'm being usefull but in more of a passive manner.
Dual Blades are fast, deal much but I personally hate being locked in the animation of Blade Dance and hardly ever being able to properly wind up Heavenly Blade Dance. Judgement call, try and see how you feel.
Another judgement call would be Long Sword. For my taste it's to slow ergo is clunky, relies to much on keeping combo up and one trick after filling the bar. Plus entire world hates you for flailing this crap around flinching every other member of the party.
Coming next are suprosignly Lance and Gunlance with second being a bit clunkier. With some experience and movement "know how" you'll be always attacking from relative safness and never get knocked over unlike other weapons. In my opinion that makes up for their clunkiness.
Everything else with exception of bowguns which I explicitly hate and deem absolute worse in every category (yeah I'm buyest on that) is pretty much same "decent" at best.
Hammer clunkiness can be mitigated with it's jump attacks but that's not always possible.
Switch Axe specially in sword form is a complete immobile wreck that hates when monsters move at all and guess what they do all the time.
With Charged Blade you should pretty much always be doing Super Amp'ed Element Discharges that take a lot of time to wind up and again due monsters movement miss 8/10 times.
At the bottom absolute king of clunk Great Sword for abvious reasons and prince Hunting Horn. The other have at least that for him that you still run when drawn but that's a small consolation prize.
If you're looking to stay mobile while doing constant damage, or simply keep doing damage while the monster isn't right on top of you then you'll be wanting the Bow, Light Bowgun and the Heavy Bowgun to a lesser extent.
Hammer has good motion since you can charge attacks while moving, not to mention it makes the most out of wall running and sliding. Also the Sword and Shield is pretty friendly to simple button although you'll want to at least try to learn some of the combos.
Longsword and Dual Blades have attack chains that will freeze you in place for the duration, but the Longsword has huge reach and the Dual Blades have fast attacks so its less noticeable, plus the Longsword lends itself well to being sheathed and drawn often as you run about.
Lance and Gunlance make you feel like a ponderous tank when you try walking around, but when you get used to the movement you stop feeling "clunky" and start realising they both have fairly short combo's that are exploitable, and that there are attacks that grant them surprising levels of agility.
Insect Glaive lets you feel as free as a bird but unless you're in the late game you're basically just a pretty helicopter not really doing much, but it definitely offers the most fluid playstyle - but when you are using ground attacks you do get locked into your combo for a few seconds, like most other weapons.
Finally, the Greatsword can be extremely clunky or extremely lightweight depending on how you build it. A Crit Draw + Quick Sheath Greatsword is perfect for "in and out" gameplay and makes mockery of slow monsters, but its regular playstyle is as slow and clunky as they come, even with Evade Extender etc.
Talking about bowgun, let's just leave the heavy type aside. Bowgun's responsive ability is determine by the shot recoil. In short, you need to find bowgun with lowest possible shot recoil according to your choices of shot to attain best responsive ability. Light bowgun also have a special evasive move if cancel from just after shooting. Heavy bowgun is just... a very strange evasive roll that I cannot master it.
Wow, 10/10 post, much advice very great wow.
That's not an advice, I'm just stating a fact.
guess thats because im just that adaptable
You Switch into Sword to deal the damage while weaving in your Ax strikes to make big positional adjustments or chase monsters when they run away or do trample attacks.
Though monstly the hop and the momentum of the weapon should be making your small position adjustments for you.
The gameplay is actually incredibly fluid in that way. But if mobility is not enough for you get Evade Extender 2 which is my personal preference and you can stick to the monsters like glue.

The Great Sword and Hammer is the same way I just dont play them enough to give better information on them. Still working on mastering the Dual Blades.
