just break his spikes while its still white. he'll keep tripping over if you do that. also if he never has his whole body covered in black spikes, he'll never use dive bomb on you. this is assuming you are hunting regular nergigante and not arch tempered nerg.

If you have a shield, you gotta learn how to block, if not, you gotta learn how to roll out of danager

some of his slam attacks send out spikes that he has as projectiles cause they blow off after slamming his hand of head on the ground, its not just a singular hitbox.

I have found that Nerg is one of those fights where you should let him come to you and then counter. I main Dual Blades so I don't have the luxury of face tanking hits like Lancers or Sword and Board. Just evade and counterattack with short combos. If you have weapons with Dragon element, use it. IIRC, Dragon Element weapons can crit against the black spikes.

Farm a better armor and try again, otherwise just try to hunt him and then you will understand when and how dodge/block/attack.:mhwgood:
As a IG main I just dance above his head doing nothing but spamming right however when I'm not dancing I'm far away from him looking for an oppertunity to dance

Some of his attacks have fairly wide hitboxes because he sprays spikes out in various directions when he does them, and a lot of his moves are set ups that combo into additional attacks that can leave you flustered if you're impatient or aggressive. Specifically I remember the one attack that caught me out constantly was his fist slam followed by the spike spray a second or so later, I'd always rush in after dodging the initial slam and get skewered by the follow up.

Really though he's fairly easy to fight, his only real threatening move is his dive bomb which is a given, and his big slam follow up attack he uses to punish you if you're too quick to get back up after being knocked down - if you get knocked down, don't panic and try to immediately stand up to heal, just wait a few seconds.

If you're still struggling, try bringing Evade Extender, Evade Window, even Leap of Faith if you're dodging, if you're using a shield and blocking get some Guard. Also consider Health Boost, Divine Blessing and Fortify.

Also, as long as you have a weapon that doesnt bounce off his black spikes, he's essentially a walking weak spot, making Weakness Exploit a good choice

anyone can beat spikey boi in under 3 minutes with perfect endgame gear. just ignore this guy @ tc.

as for the break spikes advice : its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for a new player who still doesnt have good gear at the point he must fight nerg for the first time. breaking the white spikes with a blue sharpness weapon lower dmg is quite difficult if youre not a super pro player.

the key part to beating nerg is patience and bringing a weapon that targets his thunder weakness when you first meet him. tobi weapons are great and CAN be maxed out before actually fighting him head on. pickle weapons work even better for most weapons but are harder to come by at this point as pickle is a pain with low gear.

as for dodgeing his divebomb. the only way to avoid the dmg completly is superman dive it due to its insane hitbox. once he roars (he always does before doing it) mash the sheath weapon button and then face your character towards the camera and SPRINT away from him while faceing the camera. once he dives towards you press dodge. your character will jump like an idiot and what the game doesnt tell you is that entire animation = IFRAMES. youre completly immune while doing this. stay on the floor with your face until the divebomb animation is over. youll take no dmg and all his black spikes will be gone.

if you have trouble with the roar or have a slow sheating weapon run either speed sheath or earplugs 5 (bazel armor + charm works for this) to get the seconds needed. once you get used to doing this his divebomb becomes rather harmles.

once nerg limps to his nest be a coward. just allahu akbar him all the way till he is dead. this method takes abit more time but its pretty much absoluty safe kill. wait for him to go to sleep at his nest. put down to megabarrelbombs in his face. select farcaster on quickmenu. perform the strongest single hit attack your weapon has and aim it at the bombs (not him) once everything exploded farcaster out instantly and restock bombs (if needed) and run back to his nest (unlock the 3rd camp near his nest before you fight him it helps a ton to get back there quickly) and repeat this process till he is dead. if he has a divebomb ready he wont go to sleep until he fires it at you. dodge as above and go back to bombing runs.

sounds cheesy. is cheesy. but it works even for a fully new player.

Leap of Faith is pretty much designed to make sure you never fail to dive rather than dodge during his big bomb slam. I'd almost say it's currently the only place in the game (other than surviving Arch Tempered Kulve Taroth's roll attack) where it's actually useful.

Even then it's still not necessary or required. Still, it's there if you want to absolutely make sure you don't get one shot.

Also consider eating for Felyne Moxie and even trying to wear 3 pieces of Bazelgeuse armour to activate Guts. Kinda going into the extreme at this point, but I guess it's worth a mention...every little helps, right?

Are you fighting him by yourself? If so (and if you've failed more times than you can count), fire your SOS flare and work as a team. Keep doing SOS hunts, observe Nerg's attack patterns, and then solo him when you feel confident in your abilities.
SEZER Jul 3, 2019 @ 10:53am
just use bow and stay away from him...

I personally invested in Evade extender to LV2. Tobi-Kadachi gloves get you the level 2 without too much difficulty or sacrificing other stuff. Add the Chest piece boosts you to LV3 if you want it. Helped me with some of his wider ranged attacks.
