Which weapon is better against Tobi-Kadachi?
This is really a more general question, but this is just a specific example. Basically, how can you tell when more raw is better than the status/element on the weapon?

Specifically, which of these is better for Tobi-Kadachi, who is resistant to thunder and weak to poison?

Kadachi Pillar II
Raw 527, Thunder 210

Datura Blade II
Raw 496, Poison 360

How exactly is poison damaged determined, anyway? Seems like it would be different than element damage.

Thanks!

Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, Blast and Stun are Abnormal Status Effects, and are separate from Raw and Elemental Damage. They do not deal damage with each hit, but rather cause a hidden buildup that will eventually trigger an effect.

In this particular case I'd pick the pillar if I had to because of higher raw but honestly any good raw preferably with white sharpness would beat both of the choices. Alternatively aqua rod or water glaive since tobi is supposedly 3 star weak to water.

Like 205 said abnormal statuses you build up slowly by hitting a monster with correct status weapon while with elemental or raw damage get added passively alond with each hit.

Statuses well you hit a monster enough with a sleep wpn and it will fall asleep or in this case get poisoned. Sleep and paralyze are somewhat usefull, blast is sadly trash, stun/ko you do anyway by hitting in the head.
Poison works good very occasionally like it's decent for Xeno but not much else making me think it's related to monster's hp (the bigger hp the more poison ticks are gonna hurt since it's % of hp every tick).

I know how the build up works, but I was curious how much damage is actually dealt. Is the 360 poison status on the second weapon related to the damage it does, or the build up?

And why is blast no good? I thought it was a popular choice.

the damage that poison does depsnd only by the monster weakness to poison

the posion value on your weapon only affect the build up

the only thing that can kinda increase poison damage is the pink rathian armor set bonus IIRC

Elemental is good only for bows, dual blades, and to some extent sword'n'shield and insect glaive, for the rest raw and sharpness. Go for higher raw attack weapon, water element weapon would be best if you won't lose much non-elemental attack.
Higher status value = faster buildup, stacks with jewels and skills boosting status damage.

iron fist rule for the whole game : the slower a weapon attacks the less effective elemental dmg becomes and the better RAW dmg becomes. so if youre useing a slow weapon aim for highest raw you can get.

if its a fast weapon go for water element againist tobi.

sidenote : IF you can gain the elemental dmg ON TOP of high raw its no downside haveing it. (unless the monster is fully immune to it)

this can be further refined in total on a monster by monster base but this is the core rule for the whole game.

Thanks guys. He wasn't hard either way, just curious about the finer points of choosing a weapon. :-)

Nothing more to say regarding buildup and damage thanks to kind folks above.

Now why blast is no longer popular (at least to my knowledge) is because it works best when you're able to really destroy the monster fast, otherwise you start to fall behind as the fight progresses. Being a status it simply gets harder to inflict over time.
Even with good buildup for example sleep you will be able to snooze a monster 2-3 times tops. Blast will be very similar, at first you go like "bang bang bang bang" procking it all the time and after a while you'll be pretty much doing no blast dmg at all relying just on ur raw.

Oh, I see. I thought you meant blast dust was not good. I suppose it's better since it does immediate damage, assuming you can trigger it around the monster!
