Is matchmaking broken?
I've seen reviews since this came out for PC that the matchmaking is shoddy at best, has this mostly been fixed?

it depends alot on how good your or the hosts connection are. dcs still happen from time to time. i can only speak for me personally but i rarely have issues with dcs in the last few months.

That being said, if you are using matchmaking as a reason to buy this game, then don't do it. Random matchmaking is just about the worst way to play this game. It's best enjoyed solo, or with a premade group of friends. Matchmaking feels like playing a PVP game and having players throwing the game for you.

Word of advice, buy this game with an intent of playing it solo. It is designed to be the best experience solo anyway. Multiplayer only works if everybody works together as a team, and randoms never do that.

I have it for PS4 and have only ever played solo. I'm just considering it for PC to play with a friend of mine who is interested. I also want to see what the game is like at not 30fps lol

Not sure if we are talking about the same issue but, as mentioned above a lot of the review downvote are mainly on disconnect in multiplayer when in a quest etc, and a lot of technical issue with the game. Personally the one time i have an issue is when i can't create an online session back when KT event first release on PC, that was quite long ago, iirc on PS4 i had encounter the same issue before. But so far no technical issue at all for me and my friend's that i played with on PC.

on thee other hand is, a lot of people encounter frustration when hunting with Random Player in SOS, where the Random party you played with are making a lot of mistake in the fight or keep going down in one shot etc etc, which leads to multiple quest failed in a row.
For this i can only speak for myself, i played the whole game on PC the same way i did on my PS4 (500hours+ on PS4) i played through the whole game Solo until HR100 where you clear a quest that gives you layered armor rainbow color pigment, by this point in my opinion i consider this as finishing the Story Part of the game, and when you reach this point there's probably nothing much else to do with the game really (on a standard gamer view wise).
Personally i have played MH series since MH first release on PsP, and the main reason i enjoyed MH series is because i like the hunt, even if it's fighting the same monster over and over (well it did get boring sometime) but i have fun with coming up with idea's, plan, build than can counter specific monster making the hunt smoother, or sometime just go in with non Meta build to make the hunt last longer. So after finishing the HR100 quest, all that is left to do is hunt more monster make more build set, wait for new event, and so on, so when i join an SOS hunt i just play for fun and if the quest cleared, great i get some materials for crafting, and if not then it's fine i just hunt again. So far i have seen two main issue where the quest would most likely fail in random SOS 80% of the time is, the host or party member of the quest are not well prepared for the hunt (armor wise, experience wise) example like i encounter a few time random player joined the SOS with barely 300defense on a Arch Tempered Monster hunt, which for me it's quite funny to watch them getting rekt by AT monster.
But for some player it's a frustration, mainly because they are aiming for the reward from AT hunts, and grinding for the 4 slot reward investigation quest to appear is quite a tedious task, and expecting to have an easier time if they invite more hunter to help clear the quest, and quest failing in a row until the host have to grind for more investigation quest to fail.

all in all conclusion is::
*Multiplayer is Fun if you have friend's to play with, if you are expecting from Random SOS then good luck on that.
*The game can be complete solo wise and within a week if you are that desperate like me.
*Most of the hunt's or monster in MHW can be killed within 5min~10min (except for some specific event monster, but still doable if you have a team of player to work with, figuring out the way to 15min clear Pursuit level1 ATKT with friend's were fun)

And when you reach a certain point of the game, there's nothing much to do but wait for new event to come (this is the post game of MHW).
Or what i do is search and join Random SOS just for fun, Ancient Leshen is where i had the most fun, watching random party member dying one after another until quest fail again and again, i find this is the most fun i had in killing time in MHW.
From my personal experience MHW is the simpler version of the MH series i have played, be it difficulty wise or gameplay wise. i still like to play MHXX on my Switch more, cuz i can play as Palico and there's more monster to hunt and more difficulty to challenge.

The connection is still somewhat shoddy but it's nowhere near as bad as launch was. When I say launch was bad for connection issues, I would be sitting in the hub and get kicked to an offline session. Not even doing anything I had been browsing something on my phone and got a notification that I had lost connection (not due to inactivity) due to a connection error and kicked to an offline session.

Now, the game is in a much better state but it's still not where it should be Imo, the optimization could use some more polish (a lot preferably) and there's features that from what i've read some are coming in the Iceborne update though I hope they'll give them to base game owners as well as I'm frankly sick of having to buy dlc to "fix" my games.

Oh yeah, and it has Denuvo if you are like me and on that hate wagon. But it's a fun game otherwise.
