From World to Generations Ultimate. Advice Needed!
Hi y'all.

So I'm heavily considering buying the Switch just to play MHGU. Well, I shouldn't say "just" as I might play other games on it if I like it enough lol.

World was my first MH game, and I've enjoyed the hell out of it (definitely one of my favorite games ever). However, I've gotten a bit bored with its endgame since I've done everything I needed to. I'm hoping GU will keep me occupied until Iceborne drops on PC.

Has anyone ever been in the same boat as me? Was it worth buying a 300 USD machine just to play GU?

What should I expect from GU after coming from World (the good, the bad, etc.)? I've seen some YouTubers play it and it looks like a damn good time. But I've also heard some complaints (loading between zones, etc). Is there a lot of stuff that GU doesn't tell you?

Any and all advice/tips/experiences would be GREATLY appreciated.

Oh, and does the Switch ever go on sale?

Much love.

I bought MHGU a week ago. Didn't really have any old gen MH experience before that.

Overall, I'd first say that the game was worth the price (but I already had a Switch so I didn't need to pay extra few hundred dollars for one).

The best thing about Generations is the monster and gear variety. Apparently there are over 100 different monsters there. (haven't finished the game yet). There's just insane amount of things to do.
It definitely does give you that same feel of accomplishent and progression as World does.

When compared to World though on gameplay level, MHGU does fall short on most other aspects.
There is a noticeable lack of quality of life options and it baffles me how the series has been going for so long without simple things like crafting multiple items at the same time, "take all" button for reward boxes and ability to switch your equipment after accepting a quest(but not starting the actual hunt yet). Things like that.

The new hunting styles are kind of a letdown too. Picking any hunting style apart from the basic one takes away moves from your weapon in exchange of special abilities. I get that it's a balancing act, but not being able to do the moves I'm used to from World really deterred me away from switching hunting styles.

Monster behaviour is sometimes kind of annoying, as they run away a lot more than they do in World. You don't have the Wingdrake fast travel, so it can get frustating when a monster flies to the other end of the biome and when you do catch up to it, they often run away again.

That's all the negative things I can think of. As long as you understand these and know what you're getting into, you won't be disappointed.

I love Generations Ultimate and even with these few issues I have with it, I can still definitely recommend it.

A small advice at the end here; the GU's quest rank progression is tied to specific "key quests" that are not marked nor differentiated from all the optional quests. I recommend looking up the key quest list online, because you'd definitely burn yourself out if you try to do every single optional quest too. There's just so many of them.

Have to agree with TyresTyco about the Joycons. They are... not the best for this kind of game.

Game is still fun in portable mode with them, but I do prefer playing on my tv screen, using an adapter that lets me connect any xinput/directinput controller to the console.

If you enjoy encountering new monsters and learning/farming them then you're in luck.
All weapons have multiple viable style choices, even though there are "most optimal" styles, but no one forces you to use them.

Maybe you already know this, but after beating the final boss in G-rank you unlock full body transmog, allowing you to fuse two armour sets together, your base armour with your desired skills and a visual armour. Also this fusing is for each part individually so you can mix different pieces for different looks.

Endgame* is fighting Deviants and charm farming, that's kinda it. There's also a lot of additional quests in endgame with many event quests for collaborations, beefed up monsters etc.
Completing Deviants is fighting the same monster with the same music 5-15 times before the final "EX" quest unlocks. Beating this quest allows you to transmog the Deviant's armour set.

Lastly the most important part, do you plan on getting a Nintendo online subscription? Because otherwise you're gonna have to solo everything. It is doable to solo every quest but some quests take 20+ minutes and are disgustingly difficult/annoying e.g. Hyper Silver + Hyper Gold in the arena, that's borderline artificial difficulty.

* Note that even getting to Endgame is a considerable task and there are farm upgrades etc. to complete whilst advancing in the "story".

If you use adept style or aerial style with ev+2, all quests are super easy to beat.
You can actually solo the entire game with out a set of armor easily if you go adept. Aerial, if you understand the split iframes, you can go armorless, but its risky as hell.
If you have a friend with a Switch, it does have a downloadable demo... It's just three monster fights, nothing in between, but it gives a bit of insight into gameplay. It does play differently, but some of your experience from MHW will carry over.

Unfortunately I'm new to MH as well and haven't pulled the trigger on MHGU, so I can't give any more comparisons. I'm worried I'll miss the QoL improvements, and tbh I don't use my Switch as much as I thought I would when I bought it anyway.

In case you're interested, differences between World and GU for all melee weapons are explained by this chill dude.
Man, you guys are amazing. Thank you so much for your opinions.

Tbh, Im kinda bored, don't have anything to play rn, and am looking for something to satisfy my MH itch. I'm burned out on World and am looking for a new challenge. I will wait until e3 and see what Nintendo is up to before I decide to pull the trigger.
PRAISE THE ALL MIGHTY SWORD LORD
Honestly, if you can deal with the older mechanics, It's worth the price of a switch just to pick up MHGenU. While I still prefer World for the smoother gameplay and better quality of life features, you can't go wrong with being able to see so much of the series history with GenU.

Plus, y'know, Rajang exists in GU. Everyone should fight the super saiyan monkey at some point.

Yup, I don't mind the dated mechanics at all. The loading between zones only seems to take 2 seconds from what I've seen.

Plus, this might sound weird, but I really like the clanking noise your armor makes as you run lol. It's very satisfying for some reason. So all that running around won't bother me at all. And you get to admire your gear.

Yeah, the room to room loads are pretty quick. Then again, I'm used to the terrible PSP load times when playing from a UMD.
