How to tell its time for capture?
Back in low rank Id just wait for monsters to be limping, for flying ones, just wait til they go nest where they're asleep and a shock trap is all its needed, not even tranqs.

Now in high rank even limping monsters or when they're asleep doesn't indicate they're ready for capture, often I end up killing them, or sometimes having to return to camp to get more traps and tranqs cause they're weren't ready for it.

So what's a sure way to tell they're weak enough for capture?

The surest indication is on the Minimap. If you've fully researched the monster (Monster's icon has green border around it, pick up tracks and such to reach this state) a skull symbol will be sort of pulsing to the upper right of the icon when it is ready to capture.

However. if a monster has limped off to its nest then it should be capture-able, though iirc it does regain health very slowly so if you take a while it may be able to heal itself over the capture threshold.

On the off chance you aren't aware, you need 2 tranqs, and you can tranq before you put the trap down, which can be easier than trapping then tranqing.

The best way is to look for the red pod drops from the monsters. The first one drops at around 40% hp left and the second drops at around 25% the third at 10%.

Every monster in base MHW can be captured after the second pod drops except for 2, Lavasioth and Jho you need to wait till the 3rd drop to capture them.

If you have the Plunderblade on your palico it can also drop the red pods and make it a bit confusing so i just dont use the Plunderblade.

This all goes out the window when Iceborne comes out... there are pods dropping all over the place its almost impossible to tell without waiting for the skull to appear on the mini map.

Limping = capture

Not sure why it didnt work for you

Also tranqs are always needed. Impossible to capture without tranqs.

Be picking up tracks for the monster you are hunting, eventually you'll max out the scoutfly bar and you'll be able to just look at your minimap and see a skull icon coming off the monster. Keep in mind that unless you're hard farming something over and over again, you'll have to recollect tracks every hunt, but it's not as tedious as it sounds. You can check to see if the bar is maxed by opening your map and looking at the bottom left.

+1

Pods is what I usually looked for.

Sure, you can always go for the "limp mode" or the Skull mini map, but it is not as immediate as the pods. Often times, in a high DPS team, monster dies without having a chance to escape.

Once you have capture enough monsters, you just knows when the monster is capture-able without looking at any indications.

Well, I can guarantee you I captured several low rank monsters just with the shock trap by using it when they're were sleeping, I didn't needed to tranq them, just place the trap under them when they were sleeping.

Were you in singleplayer or multiplayer? Tranqs are something like a status, you can double tranq something and then trap later and still get the tranq effects, meaning someone on your team could've tranq'd earlier and you just didn't notice.

Regardless, even if you had that experience, get used to tranqs + trap because that's how things work.

I guarantee you there was a tranq involved somewhere. You can't capture without them. Just dropping a trap on a sleeping monster doesn't do it.

unless it was environmental, or a bug, im 100% sure it happened just as i said, it was either low rank legiana or paolumu, its been a while, but i used the opportunity that they were asleep at the last phase and just the shock trap immediately did it, no need for tranqs, of that im sure, and it was single player.

Limping, high heart rate, dropped slinger bombs, skull icon on mini-map.

On the 3° slingshot ammo drop, there is a mod tô highlight the drops it's not cheat since Will bacon e oficial in iceborn.

If it's not the arena just let them go sleep to capture

The guy who replied to you is right, that's not how it works. Also, there are no environmental ways that this can happen as well. You either used tranq bombs before it went to sleep and the effect lasted long enough to still apply when you put down the trap, or you've encountered a bug that we have never seen or heard about happening before.

I'd say it's the first option, you probably just don't remember it happening. Finding a bug that nobody else found before, or at least a one you haven't heard about online, is something that almost never happens. Unless the game has just launched and nobody had time to find any bugs yet. This game has been out for a while.

Monsters drop slinger ammo when they are near death. Usually it is safe to capture them after they drop two slinger ammo. For devil jho, it's three.

maybe you left it sleeping too long, it gained back too much health and couldnt be captured
