Question about armor sets
You know how alpha has no slots but beta does? Can I mix and match them and still get the set skills?

yes you can. in fact that's what most people do. as long as the set bonus displayed is the same then you can match them. just like how the azure starlord set can be matched with the rathalos/azure rathalos armor as they share the same set bonus "rathalos mastery". what you can't match are things like the drachen set and teostra set's master's touch skill as they belong to totally different set bonuses even though they are the exact same skill. for teostra the bonus is called teostra technique and the drachen one is called soul of the dragoon

Wow, TIL. That'd be why I spotted a build using one of those combos, wondered why that was a thing. I'll definitely be finishing off the rest of that set now.

That is correct, as long it is from the same monster, you can mix and match Alpha, Beta and Gamma mixes together to get the set effects; a few armors, like diablos and black diablos, rathian and Pink rathian can be mixed; Rathalos, Azure Rathalos and the USJ armor can also be mixed together
