After all there is no wrong way to cool off your sword, just your play style and personal preference.
As Lack of Stuff said, if it's the Charge Blade you need to store the phials.
Charge Blade's gimmick is that you build up damage/energy in Sword Form and release it through phials in Axe Form through Super Amped/Amped Elemental Discharges. If you build up too much damage at once without transferring it to phials for your axe, your sword'll overheat and become, essentially, rubber. It'll do nothing but bounce until you replace the phials.
I'm sure you've noticed the UI on the top left below your health has 5 bottle looking things. Those are your phials. As you deal damage in Sword Form through the charged slash (correct me if that's not the name), button input for that on PC being just holding down right click, your phials will start changing color from yellow, to orange, to bright red. The bright red is when you'll start bouncing.
You'll want to change phials when they hit orange, so that you get the maximum amount of energy transferred to the phials without bouncing at all. Transferring while they're yellow will only yield up to 3 phials charged, as opposed to the full 5.
Once you have phials charged, they should change on the UI from clear/empty to white/full. This indicates that they're charged. Now, as you deal damage in Axe Form, you'll deal extra damage while consuming those phials. Once you're done with the phials through whatever means, be it either a few hits with the axe or a massive assault with SA/AED (Super Amped/Amped Ele. Discharge) and they've lost their charge, you switch back to sword mode via Ctrl and start the process over until the hunt is over.
At least, this is what I've gathered from practicing Charge Blade these past few weeks. It's a fun as hell weapon that I am sad I didn't get into until after I completed the story.
