How much defense one needs for events arc tempered monsters?

I ask coz I played event arc tempered nergigante and man he hits hard. I was suing DB it made me think that close combat is a no no so I thought about using bowgun at that time.

Edit: I should have specified in the title I meant arc tempered elder dragons.

but you still have to avoid getting hit as much as you can. also AT nerg is not the right place to start your AT attempts. AT NERG is the hardest AT together with luna without a doubt.

but i wouldnt try an offensive approach unless youre safe you can dodge all his moves like a pro. this is true for all ATs. running health boost 3 helps alot. tremor resist also helps againist at nerg specially to avoid staggering. blocking makes ALOT of at elders much easier to defeat. sure it also takes longer but on ATs you only need like 3-7 kills at most anyway. no point doing em after you got all the tickets needed from em.

so unless you want to score a good time aswell i would take the slow and steady approach on all AT elders. also might want to bring insurance and fortify skills. so if you cart you actually come back stronger.

that is true for all AT elders tough. all easier solo as they get 2.5 hp multiplier unlike all normal monsters which only get 2.2. so they are all easier solo.

but even solo i found AT nerg is the hardest of em. simply due to his cheap new slam move (that ruiner nerg thankfully didnt get XD) which can end your run quickly if youre unlucky with it.

AT nerg is the most ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boss..probably not a good AT dragon to start with (unless you need materials for his armor)
for DB(or i think for most people as well), the easiest one is AT Kushala, next would be Kirin and Hazak...mainly because these guys have a fairly slow attack and really predictable..Kushala's the easiest for me cause he can barely reach me with the majority of his attack lmao.( Rocksteady does its job very well)
and like the others said, they're all much easier solo

I remember when I attempted the event AT nergigante it was in group and two in the group had bowgun and the fourth cant remember and they were telling me to get away from him and suddenly bang I got killed never saw it coming...so it made me think that maybe the EVENT AT elder dragons are harder than AT elder dragon and that I should use a bowgun instead of a melee weapon.

There are no Arch Tempered Elder Dragon fights outside of the events.

there is only event AT elder dragons^^

non event ATs dont exist. unles you mean normal tempered elders. they are not even close to the same. tempered have same hp as normal one. ATs ones have like 2-3 times thier hp and double thier dmg.

Purple = Tempered
Orange = Arch Tempered

you are suppose max out your defense anyways. so 450+.

forget defense and divine protection. you are suppose to fully augment your armor and remove defense cap on them. if you need extra survival, use health boost decos. eating canteen for resistance or food skill called feline moxie helps too. bringing elemental proof mantles, as well as temporal, evasion or rocksteady helps significantly too. defense decos and defense up food buff will not help much as those give you a fix amount. after 450+ defense, anymore doesn't do much in the current game. if you decided to add too much defensive skills on your armor set, you are going to loose out on a big chunk of damage. divine protection is too RNG base even though it can save your life from time to time. the best bang for your buck would be health boost 3 since those won't require you to sacrifice too much offensive stats for a huge boost in survival. health augment on your weapon is also very good if you play melee as it recovers back some hp if you deal damage.

defense will be important when iceborne expansion hits pc as HR armor will not provide enough defense to survive master rank monsters. since they will start to 1-2shot you mid way through master rank.

The defense skill is worthless, don't bother. Divine Protection is really only consistently helpful on AT Vaal due to all the constant DoT.
