Nergigante is more a flagship monster: he's the icon of Monster Hunter World, but I wouldn't say he's the monster I immediately think of when I think Monster Hunter. Other monsters in Nergigante's status include the Legiacrus for Monster Hunter Tri and Gore Magala for MH4.
EDIT: Gore was also a lot more influential and served a greater role in MH4's story and gameplay than Nerg was for MHW, so take that how you will.
Lets ask the FFXIV playerbase who they think is the most iconic monster from the series. :)
I'm curious how much backlash there would be, especially in Japan, if a MH game released without Rathalos.

Also, you dont base stuff just because MHW was purchased more then older games. WIthout those games there wouldnt be a MHW to begin with.
