I haven't played the rest, so I can't rank them.
Also, Mask of the Sun is the only Ys game I was unable to enjoy (for the most part). All the others I enjoyed.
Worst: Seven
Middle: Bump
Best: Napish
Just so you know in my list. I included all the YS games I played. They are all good so far. But I have only played the titles on Steam.
You can if you want. I was tempted to do the same. There is three or four types of combat systems in all the yes games. Like you mentioned Bump, Nepish if you want to call it that, and Seven which is what I would describe as party based.
Curious do you lump Seven and Eight together? Because I feel Eight might even be on it's own. It's even pretty different from Seven in my opinion which is why I said there may be four types? But while I can group them into there own types. That does not mean I like them depending on there combat system. For example my list is pretty mixed. I even like Ys 2 more than Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim. And Seven more than all of them. lol But I can certainly understand where your coming from.
woooot?
Ys II is awesome, as is VI/Felghana/Origin. I also like Seven, just not as much. They're all great - don't make me pick! ;)
I do put Seven and VIII in the same category (along with Celceta)... I mean, the main difference is the camera angle, and that when you switch characters, you just transform into a party member instead of the camera catching up to that party member... but it's basically the same thing... 3 damage types, 4 skill slots...
If there is a fourth type, it'd be the one for the SNES side-scroller. :D
But yeah, I definitely had the most fun in terms of gameplay playing the Napish games.
I won't judge anyones choices/ranking. But are you saying that comment directly to me or everyone else as well. Most people here posting so far have said they like Seven more than 1. Not everyone but most people. I am the odd one out giving YS:7 #1 though.

I & II. The most fabulous game.
The Oath in Felghana. Little compact epic.
Memories of Celceta. Good new direction in series.
Seven. Good new direction in series... Except plot. Plot was a little disappointing.
The Ark of Napishtim. Good new direction in series...Except mad jumps and quest for pikards.
Kefin - Lost Kingdom of Sand. Pleasant disappointment. It had a chance to become the best Ys game. But Falcom has failed, and only remake can try again.
Mask of the Sun. Bad interpretation of the plot, boring gameplay.
<Meh>
I can't rank other games like VIII. VIII is not complete. Dawn of Ys was played on YouTube. Never saw Ys Online and Ys Strategy. Wanderers from Ys have about 5 minutes in my memory.
Oh. I have forgotten about Origin. Speaking of truth, I am strongly dislike Origin plot. Origin on level of Mask for me.

Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys

Still haven't played Memories of Celceta or VIII, only checked out the PS2 remakes of III, IV and V for a laugh, so I can't really judge them: but they all seemed inferior to the originals.
I agree. Reason why Ark is probably so low on my list. Other reasons too why it's so low. And I still like the game. In some ways it's still has really good moments. But the controls/jumps and how your supposed to do it all feels janky. And so far I hate Pikard quests in all Ys games that I can remember.

I didn´t play Celceta yet and I didn´t complete Ys VII and Ys VIII yet.
I assume Ys YIII could get the 3rd place, made good impressions till now.
I´m not certain about Ys VII yet, I can only say I dislike it´s artstyle.
