And reduce supersampling setting from in-game graphic settings as well, it should be the reason your GPU usage went skyrocket.
This is it. 1080ti here, max supersampling on a 165Hz GSync monitor and it works perfectly. I think DWM (Windows's own desktop window manager since 7) may be chunking you down and sticking it when you go back to the game. Can't say I have proof, only anecdotal evidence and some reading I've done. But surely don't pain your eyes with lowly 60fps
